One of my favorite moments as a public librarian occurred when I showed the control/+ function to an elderly patron using one of the computer terminals. He was frustrated because he was trying to follow some written instructions on how to view pictures of his granddaughter or something, but he couldn't read anything on the screen. It was the main reason he'd never attempted to use the internet. When I showed him that simple trick, it was like suddenly introducing him to the 21st century. His eyes just lit up.
That was a stressful-ass job, but it had its moments.

Sometimes my grandmother gets me to help her with her netbook.
She has a netbook! She pirates movies with it.
Pretty cool.

because I don't know where the old celebrity-encounters thread went:
last time I was in Chelsea, I basically accidentally body-checked Ethan Hawke coming out of a restaurant. Since we're staying right around the corner from that place, we've been joking about running into Ethan Hawke.
Walking the dog this morning, I stayed with him on the sidewalk while M went into a place for coffee. Dogwalking changes my perspective--when people approach, the first thing I see is their dogs. So along comes this larger dog, attached to ... Ethan Hawke.
He went into the same coffee place, but M didn't notice him until she got back out and I was all "hey, look at the guy in the green shirt." She was pretty amused, and it allowed me to revive my gripes about that atrocious Brooklyn's Finest movie.
Anyway, point being, I guess if you wanna see Ethan Hawke, just walk around 21st street/9th ave a lot.

In the spirit of the thread: here's a recent dialogue between my lady and I -- not about a Hawke, but about a Ladyhawke.
C: You've never seen Ladyhawke?!?!
G: No. Should I?
C: Yes! Maybe. It was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid.
G: So you're not sure if it'd hold up?
C: How could it not hold up? It's about MAGICAL CURSED LOVERS! And it takes place in medeival times! During the night, the man turns into a wolf, and during the day, the woman turns into a hawk, so they can travel together, but they are ALWAYS APART
G: Man, it sounds like the lady got the better deal there.
C: Turning into a hawk?
G: No, having her lover turn into a wolf. It's gotta be way easier to fuck a wolf than to fuck a hawk.
C: Huh. Yeah, I guess. I don't even know how you'd fuck a hawk.
G: I guess maybe if the hawk perches on your dick wih its talons wrapped around the shaft, you can just kind of slide it back and forth.
C: Oh, you mean a hawkjob.
G: Yeah, a hawkjob, they call it.

This summer one of my brother's friends from New Zealand spent a couple days at our house during his van tour of the US. We took him to one of our baseball games, and on the way back we were talking about music, and I said something about Ladyhawk. The kiwi was all "Oh, you know Ladyhawke?" But I had to tell him I was talking about a different Ladyhawk, the not-so-famous one.

I've thought a lot about hawks, but never that thought.

This site is awesome, nny. Except I'd have captioned the shark photo, "GREAT WHITE THINKS IT'S GONNA DIE."
NP: Iris just offered me a pretend sandwich. "What kind?" I asked. "Peanut butter and jelly pizza. With sugar."

Gotta say I have definitely missed you guys & LPTJ generally, though I'm glad I took a little break after embarrassing myself. Also I am mad more productive when not posting here.

Pollo! You've been missed. I was hoping you'd jump in on the Gilt Plane to Style thread about the flaming-butt chickens on Bernard's rug. Then I could've commented -
well, speak of el diablo
.

that, for sure. actually, not having internet in my apartment is also useful. though I rarely stay at my apartment because I also don't have a working shower or bedroom because my landlord never did anything about my floor exploding.
