Nice try, jeb, but I think we all know that the earth filled with teleported plasma is accessible to beings less advanced than a Type R Civilization

despite my compelling anecdotal evidence that none but those possessed of ninth-generation Boston Brahmin bloodlines read urology journals,
this
is probably one of the better pieces published in an academic journal in the past decade.

Classic. That's exactly why I wear loose-fitting clothes, too.

That gives me a lot of inspiration for the "research at the crossroads between science & technology studies and sensory studies" that I am supposed to be doing over the next three years.

I'm just a little disappointed that I didn't know about this before finishing my dissertation; it would have fitted perfectly into my literature discussion on the role of the non-visual senses in science. Ah well, there will be another opportunity.

I already knew that it was bad to put eggshells, coffee grounds and rice in disposals, but I just found out that citrus rinds, despite making it smell good, are also bad for disposals. Boo. Apparently the better way to clean them is to run a bunch of ice through them once a week or so.
(Just had a guy come in and fish a now unrecognizable chunk of metal out of mine, and we discussed proper disposal care a bit.)

Random fact: that post finally inspired to look up what a garbage disposal - something I had previously occasionally seen/heard referred to on American TV shows - actually is. Interesting.

I've never lived anywhere with a garbage disposal! Though it must be great. Would also love to have a dishwasher.

Garbage disposal seems like it would be a hinderance to recycling. I would love to throw stuff down that shouldn't be thrown down there though. Like human body parts.
I've never had a dish washer. Also, after 24 years living at home it was really weird to move into places without washing machines.

We had a disposal installed a few years ago and I think I've used it less than ten times since.
Having a dishwasher is great except it highlights my laziness when I forget to wash the not-safe-for-dishwasher stuff for a month.

Disposals are great—I don't intentionally throw stuff in mine so much as I am less careful about what goes down the drain (just nothing super hard) and rinse leftover vegetable bits from food prep and stuff off of cutting boards and down the drain and not worry about it, then i just run the disposal now and then. My first two apartments didn't have dishwashers or disposals, but my last one and this one have both, and while not necessities by any means, they are certainly handy. Except, of couse, when you somehow drop some mysterious metal object in there and fuck the whole thing up... the guy said that he gets called out a lot for that sort of thing, and usually it's bottle caps, but whatever was in mine didn't look like that.

Yes.
I don't know of anything that could be recycled that I've put down the drain. There's far more overlap with composting but I haven't done that since living in rural Michigan.
I had them in the houses in Arizona and it was nice to use the sink for peeling carrots and whatnot. Here in NYC without a disposal I have had to get used to throwing such peels away.

oh right. i swear i've seen things in the movies and stuff that are like hatches that you throw all your trash in and like they go into a chute and down into a trashcan outside.

I was a maintenance type dude for a complex of section 8 units in college and the second most common thing I did was fix garbage disposals. Garbage disposals are the most disgusting thing to work on, all putrefied gray ichor oozing out until you finally find a chunk of half-digested spoon or whatever.

I had something non garbage disposal related to say and this thread is old as hell so
http://www.lastplanetojakarta.com/forums/index.php/topic,13360.0.html#new
carry on with your garbage grinding selves.
growing up we had one and I was always scared of getting my hand stuck down in it when a knife would fall into the antechamber.
