Real talk, on the Slate podcast today Jody Rosen read the relevant "authenticity" passage of the SFJ Lana Del Rey thinkpiece aloud

Once you resign yourself to the fact that there's nothing more responsible in the world to devote your time and attention to than rock n roll - and feel the uncomfortable urge to write about it - you have the option of either whoring yourself out or taking your side or Sticking To It. I've done a bit of both, and sometimes I can even live with myself!
I've been saddened to hear that the guy who puts out the Negative Guest List zine/label died a couple of days ago. I've been flipping through a bunch of the 33 issues he put out. Without doubt one of the best zines I've ever come across. It already was an institution of sorts in aus punk and well on it's way to claiming the same status over the greater punk community. He was only 22.

My old boss pointed me towards this

and I think it's pretty tight.

I few minutes ago I was wondering what an aqualung is. Now I'm wondering how it feels to be thick as a brick. Three guesses who I'm listening to.

They're a much better source on the latter than they are on the former. How long before you get to passion plays?

I expect I'll be abandoning Tull for the evening without getting to
Passion Play
. Or
Songs From the Wood
, which is also a fun one.

Man
Something Else by the Kinks
is so good. "Waterloo Sunset" gets its due accolades but how amazing is "Two Sisters"? These are things I think about when Killer Mike segues to the Kinks in itunes

I honestly think my favorite song on Something Else is Harry Rag.

Did a little informal poll of my morning class today to see how many of them had watched the Grammys last night. 3 of 25. Incidentally those are the same three people who raised their hands in response to my next question, "Who's purchased a CD in the past year?"

All the Grammy awards I care about are given out earlier in the day in like a Sizzler banquet room or something
By the way, the winner of Best Classical Instrumental solo, Joseph Schwantner's Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra with Christopher Lamb as the soloist, is one of the sickest things. ONE OF THE SICKEST. You guys should get on that.

I was looking for some files among the foundation stuff at work, and saw one labeled "Yo La Tengo." Apparently, they named us as one of the beneficiaries of their Hannukah charity shows at Maxwell's back in 2004. Jon Benjamin, Jon Glaser and some other dudes (including Conor Oberst?) performed as well. So weird to randomly come across something like that. Since I've been there, we've participated in events with like, Train and Dar Williams. And Sting, I guess. I need to make us cool again.

M really likes Lana Del Rey a lot. I think it's kind of tepid but certainly not awful or offensive in anyway, and I found some of her stuff fairly pleasant. And that is my totally unnecessary two cents. Let's talk about punk rock now.

I thought Lana del Rey was incredibly boring. I heard Taylor swift perform at the Grammys and I liked that song. Punk rock, hmmmm puuuuuuunk roooooock. I listened to a lot of riot grrrl yesterday and got mean. It's a good way to feel sometimes. Tonight im supposed to see the togas (Ty segall and Shannon from Shannon and the clams are in it?) but everything always starts too late and I'll probably do the non punk thing and go to bed.

Hey yeah, I thought that Taylor Swift song was really good. I enjoyed her performance more than just about anything else about the Grammys.

by far the worst thing to happen was chris brown winning a grammy immediately after a brief mention of gil scott-heron
