Did ya'll hear about this? Is pollo in danger of getting et by a lion???
http://www.npr.org/2011/10/19/141493125/exotic-animals-escape-ohio-farm-owner-found-dead
Did they really need to kill that many of them? There was no way they could have been trapped? And they were kept in cages? There wasn't a habitat area that was blocked off? What the hell was this guy doing?

This summer, Mazzola was found dead on a water bed, wearing a mask and with his arms and legs restrained, at his home in Columbia Township, about 15 miles southwest of Cleveland.

That story is a fucking gold mine, peacocks. You just don't get to write sentences like this very often:
Quote
"[The owner] was in hot water because of the animals, because of permits, and (the animals) escaping all the time," White said. A few weeks ago, she said, she had to avoid some camels which were grazing on the side of a freeway.

The whole thing is actually really sick and sad, IMO. None of those animals should have been there, and now a large number of them are going to be mercilessly gunned down by toothless good old boys because some fucking idiot thought it'd be fun to run a zoo. If he weren't already dead I'd say he should be taken out back and beaten with a length of rubber hose filled with sand.

Obviously that's just an emotional gut reaction and I wouldn't actually wish the dude harm were he still alive--I hope he kept all of those animals because he genuinely really liked caring for them, but everything about him in that article suggests more a nasty hillbilly keeping animals he didn't know how to care for in less-than-optimal conditions. Fucking ODNR needs to get their shit together; these backwoods zoos are just disgusting.

I want a pet lion.
see if the kids ever bitch about doing dishes again. "OK, well you can clean up lion poop instead. I'm pretty sure he's not hungry right now."

I'm with everything pollo is saying. Plus it's led to a barrage of "stay classy, Ohio", which always makes me a little fuck-you.

I'M ON THE TELEVISION
(about halfway through the clip) talking about the Occupations. I have bad teeth. I want to do it again and again but I can't cos we need variety. That show airs every Wednesday so we're going to have a roster of people to go and talk on it/be a visible presence.

I went to my local occupy thing. It was equal parts intriguing and frustrating.
My only advice is that you just go there and take part. Hate it if you hate it, but at least form your own opinion.

Shitty roadside "zoos" like that are all over the place, not just SE Ohio, and they're almost all fucking awful. This is just one reason why.

The more I hear about this story, the more horrified I am that I found humor in it. If I were the Beatles, this post would be my "Butcher" cover.

You were awesome, Anne.
I must have gotten some captions mixed up in an LPTJ photo thread somewhere, because up until you were interviewed, whenever the camera panned over the OWS crowd I'd think, "Hey, there's G.C.R.!"

100% They can make all kinds of excuses about why they needed to shoot 40 roaming exotic animals instead of tranquilizing and trapping them (and they aren't even good excuses. I can totally see a bunch of cops saying "hey look bobby let's go on safari! weeeeehoooooooo!") but there's no excuse for the lack of regulations the state has on owning such animals and the lack of requirements for how to properly keep them. If the only thing between the general public and some aggressive lions is a cage door... yer doin it wrong. I don't understand how these people can call themselves animal lovers.

Call me old-fashioned, but I could have done without graphic photographs of his battered and bloody corpse on the homepage of the BBC News and Guardian websites.

Well, a grown adult only threw water out of a third story window onto anti-Walmart protesters twice today (that I know of).
