i am going to start a blog where i review action movies from the 80s and 90s.

first of all, what should i name it?

secondly, what's the best platform to use these days. tumblr? or is that just for posting old black and white photos and song lyrics?

I like blogspot blogs. They seem easy to change around and stuff. The title should be: "100% pure adrenaline!" OR "Listen you snot-nose little shit, I was takin' shrapnel in Khe Sanh when you were crappin' in your hands and rubbin' it on your face."

I think Tumblr is like anti-readable; if you're actually, y'know, writing stuff, I'd go with blogspot or blogger.com or something.

I think a <blogname>.wordpress.com blog is free: http://en.wordpress.com/features/

Using the software on my own server is also free. Having my own server to use it on, as it happens, for me, is also free, and I don't really have any idea what current hosting costs are like for small sites.

I like Posterous slightly better than Blogspot. I think Calepin is the easiest and simplest, though.

The coolest part about Posterous, and their gimmick when they first started, is you just post by sending an email to post@posterous.com. Subject is the title and body is the post. They've added a little bit more stuff now so they aren't as super-simple as they used to be, but it's still where my (effectively defunct) blog lives.

My 2 basic ideas boil down to this:

1) do a bunch of stuff in photoshop and edit 10 kinds of hell out of your blog template
2) get a bigger image

I haven't updated my blog in a few months but I still get a number of visits from Egyptians and what I can only assume is some branch of the Saudi state security apparatus.

Posterous sounds kind of cool.

i built up a pretty decent audience through tumblr after two years of blogging to absolutely no one through wordpress

sayin'

but then tumblr also requires a kind of investment in its 'community' which after three years is pretty much 100 percent gross

I never kept up with my blog like I'd meant to. I keep thinking I'll start it again, but I probably won't.

Fuck a Tumblr though. Commenting on shit and trying to have discussions on there is annoying as fuck.
