I'm giving it a first listen right this very second. Gorgeous so far.

"Only for You" is my first favorite song of the year. I might listen to it all day long.

started out thinking "this is some sadbastard shit" but it's building, it's building. I could listen a bit more I think.

If you haven't listened to (previous record) The Mountain yet, you should. It's one of my favorite albums of the past 5 years. Swampy and stompy and rough and slow and lovely. And catchy as hell for good measure.

I saw them open up for Jenny Lewis a few years ago and was blown away. The drummer gave one of the most entertaining performances I can recall, and Wennerstrom is commanding as fuck.
They've worked their way out of the garage and into a sound I don't think anybody else has, really. Definitely one of my favorite bands these days.

but it's building, it's building.
And this is a key element to that sound...their songs build in very powerful, very deliberate ways. Listening to a 7-1/2 minute Heartless Bastards song will generally be worth your while.

They're definitely doing something that nobody else really is.
Listened to the new one last night, it has this cool kind of AOR station broadcasting in 1970s rural New Mexico kind of thing going on.

Yeah, on first listen, I'm liking the weirder meandering tracks best, but I also like the change of pace the more straight-ahead stompers provide.
And I am totally smitten with Only For You.

I'll say this, Heartless Bastards albums have always been a mix of the two, but this is the first album where I've noticed they're able to sneak those stompers up on you and catch you unawares. I think the album as a whole is pretty thoughtfully structured. I need to listen more.

I played the whole thing through today, and am pretty smitten with "Only for You" too. I liked the rest, but it wasn't 100% there for me. The vocals are great, it's just that she gets so much out of every word that I forget what words I'm hearing, which is a thing for me.
I'll try another album at some point, maybe I just need to get familiar.

No, you're right, I think. It's definitely more about the vocals than the lyrics.

From your always consistent contributions of awesome album covers in this thread I'm assuming you choose your music by the cover.
