sale at local store a few days ago: all used vinyl and used CDs (priced between $1.99 and $6.99), HALF PRICE. i picked up...

on vinyl

adam & the ants - friend or foe
adam & the ants - prince charming
alice cooper - killer
original soundtrack to american graffiti
the b-52s - mesopotamia
buffalo springfield - buffalo springfield again
the byrds - ballad of easy rider
bob dylan - another side of bob dylan
the eagles - the long run (i had to have "these shoes")
ELO - new world record
brian eno - taking tiger mountain (by strategy)
cyndi lauper - she's so unusual
john lennon & yoko ono - double fantasy
gordon lightfoot - if you could read my mind
manheim steamroller - save the wildlife (for the nostalgia)
roger miller - king of the road
montrose - montrose
the rascals - time peace: greatest hits
roxy music - roxy music (the first one)
santana - santana
neil young - american stars & bars
neil young - neil young (the debut)

and on CD

the breeders - last splash
the cure - the head on the door
deerhoof - milk man
john fogerty - blue moon swamp
pj harvey - rid of me
mastodon - lifesblood
ozma - spending time on the borderline
pernice brothers - yours mine & ours
stone roses - the very best of
they might be giants - apollo 18
XTC - rag & bone buffett

total price tag for all this crazy music: $62.72

so far, everything is pretty amazing. i'm most impressed with the pj harvey album (which i'd never heard despite a decade of hype) and that john fogerty album, which is a lot better than it had any right to be.

the only disappointment so far is the deerhoof. i think i like the music well enough, but those stereolabish vocals nauseate me.

oh, and i plan to pick up that new FALL compilation in a bit...the 50,000 fans one. i had totally wired for awhile, and i liked it well enough, but i never listened to the second disc, and this new comp has all my favorites from the first disc, PLUS all the later-era fall stuff that i haven't yet heard. so i sold totally wired for money to buy this.

how's that blinding light LP, andrew?  they're playing here with converge--i think they're from minneapolis, or at least have members of threadbare or something.

do you like that neil young album? i've never got around to picking it up, but i'm a huge neil young fan.

i actually haven't been able to listen to the neil young, because i don't have an amp for my stereo right now. so i just bought it because like you i am a huge fan and i knew i'd want it whenever i got around to having a working turntable/amplifier arrangement again.

as for the blinding light--yes, it's the singer for threadbare/krakatoa, and may or may not include more members from those bands? i don't know. what i do know is that it fucking slays. incredibly heavy and powerful. "brutal" is definitely the word. the mp3 that i heard off the deathwish website, "hydrant", is amazing, but it led me to expect neurosis/isis-style slow heavy doom. however, that's the only song on the record that's that slow, and the rest of it is far more likely to mix the occasional blastbeat with crushing midtempo mosh riffs. if you remember jesuit, they aren't too far from that.

Two discs chock full o' crunchy, fuzzy indiepop chestnuts from "all your favorite bands."

Twee as fuck, indeed.

william shatner - has been

viktor vaughn - vv2: venomous villain

i looked for the new pig destroyer but tower didn't have it yet. i thought it came out today. so instead i got the viktor vaughn, which is funny because i know i'll just buy the pig destroyer in a few days, so there's really no "instead" about it at all.

yay! i'm so glad there is now someone with which to share the joy that is william shatner.

two new ones for me:

CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN new roman times (pretty damn great for their first outing in a decade and a half...this was my free cd choice when i renewed my MAGNET subscription)

and, more importantly,

LEFT OF THE DIAL: dispatches from the 80s underground (new rhino box set...came out today)

just about to dig into that last one. if customers would stop coming in my damn store and allow me some peace and quiet, that is!

very true. if someone had told me earlier in the year that another awesome zombie movie would come out and top the dawn of the dead remake i would have called them a beautiful liar. but hey here we are.

in other news, terrifyer is a monster of an album. i think ive listened to it about 7 times today. i need to hit up a friend with a nice 5.1 setup so i can check out Natasha.

first batch of new CD's in a long time... damn... feels good...

got :

Tom Waits - Real Gone   (really really good... highlight being the 10 minute 'Sins of my Father'... the ONLY thing you can do for a song that good is make it longer... Tom knows this... amazing how time breezes by...)

John Cale - Fragments Of A Rainy Season   (finally got this on CD... i've had the MP3's for so long they were growing cobwebs...)

Leonard Cohen - Ten New Songs    (already limbering up for 'Dear Heather'... and tell me, when listening to 'Boogie Street,' does anyone else have to forcibly resist images of Leonard Cohen covered in bling, driving a grey mercedes full of blondes down a dark highway in the rain...)

Pulp - This Is Hardcore    (it makes me angry that this album wasn't the hit that Different Class was... Pulp produced a masterpiece with this, and nobody cared... the video for the title track is also my vote for best music video ever made, ever...)

The Essential Cyndi Lauper    (When you were mine... I gave you all of my money... but time after time... you done me wrong.... enough said... Cyndi kicks arse... always did... always will...)

The Complete Early Recordings of Skip James    (this cost me far too much... i could have had a different compilation cheaper, but this one has the best remastering... they cleaned up the recordings, but not TOO much... and by this i mean they just evened up the volume between tracks and stopped it clipping... all the ugly hiss and crackle is still there... thank god...)

OP8 - Slush    (Giant Sand plus Lisa Germano... for NZ$8... how could i not?? possesses a fantastic cover of Hazlewood's 'Sand'...)

Jeffrey Lewis - It's The Ones Who've Cracked That The Light Shines Through     (a lot of people seem to hate this guy, but i think he's fantastic... more for his lyrics than anything else, i will say...)

Speaking with all the authority I can muster without actually going to see the remake, you are out of your mind.

allow me to weigh in:

the remake of dawn of the dead was fucking sweet. not the original by any means, but fucking sweet nonetheless.

also, does the billy liar 7" have all 4 songs from the cd ep? because i must say i was really impressed by the two new songs ("everything i try to do, nothing ever seems to work out right"--or something like that--and "sunshine"), and i would love to have them on vinyl.

nah the originals my least favorite of the trilogy by far. the new one was much better i think.

also: who watches zombie movies for substance? oooooh all the zombies are going to the mall, what a deep commentary on our society. gimme a break.
