they're kind of like early metallica reincarnated with math rock guitars and keith moon drumming.

man what

just one man's opinion.

i can see the math comparison and whatever, but im not seeing the bay area thrash connection at all personally. elaboration maybe?

My student loan comes in on Tuesday, and I'll be buying records for the first time in several months. I'm working really hard to decide what i need to pick up right away. I'm unnaturally excited.

like when i say early metallica, i'm talking early in the sense of their entire career, like their first four records, not just kill 'em all.  and really, not kill 'em all at all, more like master of puppets.

i still dont see it, but the point is that mastodon is really fuckin good (dont let the metallica comparisons give you the wrong idea heh). its taking me some spins to get into the new vocal style on some songs, but at least they changed it up some. the one note screaming got a little monotonous on the first album sometimes. i forsee it growing on me a lot, ive liked it more each time ive listened to it. so yeah, good shit.

also the new Esoteric album completely slays. if anyone out there is even remotely into doom in any way check them out post haste. amazing, album of the year material.

Are you trying to say that the first few Metallica records weren't good?  If so, you's talkin' crazy talk.

i've been excited about that david kilgour record. it gets a "must have" rating on my wishlist at amazon.com. love the clean, but never heard his solo stuff beyond the two tracks on the new merge sampler (i think both are great).

bought tuesday:

i loved the gbv immediately--don't know why it took me so long to buy it--and i like the twilight singers plenty, but it's a more difficult album to wrap your head around. i'll keep listening, and it will grow.

mastodon sounds intriguing. if the goddamn sound on my computer wasn't shot, i'd give 'em a listen somewhere.

ok, so i went to a record store today and totally by chance my eyes passed over a copy of that new mastodon album. totally fucking surprised that they had it--infuriatingly inconsistent selection--but thought what the hell, i'll give it a listen.

holy godness.

my ears haven't gotten a whipping like that in a long, long time, and they LIKED it! and the drummer, my god. so yeah, this album will be mine. and sooner rather than later.

oh, and as far as the metallica thing goes: i can definitely hear it. in fact, if you don't think track 8 (or 9) sounds EXACTLY like metallica's "call of ktulu" (off ride the lightning), well, then, there's really only one explanation: you haven't heard metallica's "call of ktulu". it's practically a cover for a few seconds there at the beginning.

but yes, granted, mastodon rocks much MUCH harder.

and the production's better, too. thanks for the rec.

edit: haha, i just found this comment in one of the customer reviews at amazon: "Makes Pantera's Vulgar Display of Power sound like Vulgar Display of Ballads." ahahaha Laughing

i was surprised to find that mekons album for so cheap. it's been out of print forever, and i got it for about 8 bucks on ebay. contains the fear and whiskey LP, the slightly south of the border EP, and five other assorted tracks from that period.

Good choice!  It's a shame that Graceland cast such a long shadow, because I think this is the better album by far.

the one album that isn't guided by voices is that newish album from the advantage, the respectable nintendo cover band. it's good, too.

max- I agree; Rhythm Of The Saints is all-around a better album than Graceland but is wholly unheralded. Along with Hearts And Bones, it's his only album that's unquestionably consistent. I'm really happy to see someone else into it. I couldn't stomach any of his 2001 album, 'You're The One'; it was limp.

that's a Gordon Lightfoot collection; his first 5 albums on three CDs. mmm...

I remember the days, waiting for that big check, and then buying records with it.  I went to school in Tallahassee, and I lived right across the street from Vinyl Fever which is one of the best record stores I've ever seen.  I miss you Vinyl Fever!!
Anyway, I have this friend who was getting his PhD who didnt really need his student loans but got one just so he could spend it all in records.  Amazing.

yeah, i remember awesome student loan surpluses.  i funded my entire jobless crusty road trip summer on one long ago.

a couple of years later i funded a portion of a trip to australia on one, putting an end to my student loan suprluses for good because i then had to use them to pay of my mounting credit card bills.  it was good while it lasted.
