Wait, is that the one on the bassplayer from Fall Out Boy's label? Some dude bagging groceries at Trader Joe's was bitching about that a few months ago, the injustice of it all and whatnot.

yeah, they got back together and immediately pete wentz was like "I LOVE YOU GUYS DO A RECORD ON MY LABEL" and they were like "ok, sure." so they have a new album. i've heard it, and it's not as good as the "hello bastards"/"jersey's best dancers" peak period, but fuck... it's still good. it's kinda like how the newer samiam albums can't measure up to the first three... but who cares, they're still samiam albums, so they're still damn good.

it's weird though, because ari's voice is way cleaner than it used to be. i think he mighta taken vocal lessons, and that doesn't fit with my mental impression of lifetime. but whatever. none of it matters enough to take away from blake's enthusiasm.

that kid at trader joe's needs to grow up, by the way.

I'm not sufficiently interested in Fall Out Boy to bring the hate for them (or stupid enough to begin a pointless war), and I'm actually about as excited about the Lifetime album as Blake is, even if my hopes aren't too high, but I will say this: God bless Trader Joe's baggers who bitch about new Lifetime albums.

i will admit to being rather disappointed with the new fall out boy record, while we're on the subject. that said, i have no idea why anyone would have beef with a band signing to a label run by one of the members of fall out boy. i mean, i guess maybe the whole "major labels aren't punk" controversy, but i've thought that position was invalid for a long time now.

I think I can close this topic out by concluding that, despite living (or at least working) in indietown itself (Silver Lake, Los Angeles), our bagger friend may not be up to speed on these debates. Dude probably still resents Jawbreaker for going major, but I'm standing my appreciation for the guy--I don't know if Richmond is just way cooler than anywhere I've been, but "paper or plastic" is about what I get out of most grocery baggers (except the guy here in Miami who has tried, twice now, to convert me to his fucking evangelical church), so some schmuck muttering about Lifetime is always gonna be a grocery highlight for me, misguidedness of his opinions aside.

Used Vinyl:

Nancy Sinatra - Sugar
Nancy Sinatra - Country, My Way

New Vinyl:
Black Lips - We Did Not Know The Forest Spirit Made The Flowers Grow

Sugar has a rather saucy cover.

See, I didn't know about any of the label controversy, haven't heard a thing off it, etc. I was just cruising around this here internet yesterday and saw that album and also noticed that it was released yesterday. And I bought it and am hell of excited. Hell of.

I know it won't be that great a Lifetime record, but I am willing to bet that it will be better than most of the other shit coming out.* Call me old-fashioned.

I got Nas - Illmatic the other day.  I tried to play it at low volume and read last night but his words just sucked me away.  I know it's nothing new but he's sooooo good at the rapping stuff.

PS Also bought tickets to the show in Boston on the 11th. What can I say, I love this band.

PPS It's not like they are touring with Fall Out Boy or sucking Pete Wentz's wang, come now. Still punk.

yaaaassssss...

notice the whitebreads backing him. godam 50's.

It is mad good, though. The version of Day-O is taken real slow and it kinda gives me wood. Also, the "Jamaica Farewell" is definitive, as they say, by which I mean it is fucking the best thing ever put to tape, almost.

Is that the, "Sad to say, I'm on my way/ Won't be back for many a day..." song?  Friend put that on a mix for me back in the day.  God, that's a pretty song.

Harry Belafonte was the only concert, I think, that I ever saw with my mom. It wasn't at Carnegie Hall and it wasn't in the '50's (it was, like, late '80's or so, maybe early '90's - likely riding his Beetlejuice return to the public consciousness although I'm not sure exactly), but it was still pretty great.

Bought some Aussie punk that I was looking out for: Hard-Ons' Very Exciting! and The Celibate Rifles' A Mid-Stream of Consciousness, both from around 2003. Hard-Ons have been 'round since '82 and The Celibate Rifles since even earlier - about '78. Both albums are fine examples of journeyman rock and rolling that is satisfying for its very Australianess. And immaturity. I mean, thoughtful music is great, but salad's nothing without cotton candy occasionally. Black cotton candy. With balls.

I've always meant to get the Funkadelic album and finally did. I'd like to give the Prince thread credit for the second purchase, but it was really the $3 price tag that inspired it. It's on now, and it's pretty good.

I've got a decent but far from complete Throwing Muses/Hersh/Donnelly collection, and I've been hitting it pretty hard lately, so it was time to expand it. The second album here is the Bulletboys, Freakshow. It's possible Andrew or Jim would defend this album; it looks like a piece of shit to me, but again, for $3 I coudn't resist the ridiculous "Special limited edition digiscope CD package," which basically amounts to a case that opens into a beyond-cheesy 3D pull-out "freakshow."

I've been curious about this one since it dropped; it's a strange album, since it's credited to "PE featuring Paris," but Paris wrote all of the songs. Then again, that's pretty much why I got it--Sonic Jihad was better than anything PE's done since the first Bush administration, so I'm fairly psyched about this.

Used vinyl that arrived by mail this morning:

The B-52's - S/T
Hawkwind - Bring Me The Head Of Yuri Gagarin
Hawkwind - S/T
Hawkwind - Levitation/live 79 double.

Good way to start my Saturday.

oh, well, when you put it that way, i'll totally agree with you. excellent point.

also, blake, the more i listen to the new lifetime the more it grows on me. it may not be as amazing as "hello bastards" or "jersey's best dancers", but it's close. ari's vocals are a bit off-putting at first because he seems to have either learned to sing in the interim or have been put through autotune, but the end result is a combination of what he did on "background"-era lifetime records and the more familiar later sound. which works really well for me once i got used to it.

and finally, auto-da-fey, i will not defend any bulletboys record after the first one. i think the one you've got there is the third one, in which case i would expect it to suck balls. the first one isn't even that great, honestly, though it's got a couple of classic songs and a whole lot of frank talk about male genitalia (which makes it more awesome than it would be without all that).

I put the album on last night, and man . . . it would be lucky to even reach the balls. This album doesn't take its suckage past the perineum.

The digiscope CD case totally justifies the purchase, though.
