I bought a used copy of Beck's "One Foot In The Grave" today for $8. It's really really really good.

i LOVE my $3 copy of nilsson schmilsson.

and you know, as much flak as pitchfork gets these days, i'd never have picked that record up if i hadn't first seen it in their top 100 albums of the 70s list. never even would have known it existed.

so, thanks pitchfork. thanks for nilsson.

aw, man. i really gotta pull that one off the shelf and give it a listen sometime soon.

i got my copy in the shortlived $2 music section at the chain bookstore where i worked in macon, georgia. also found depeche mode's songs of faith and devotion and the soundtrack to amongst friends (original score by mick jones, haha).

i remember showing my friends this "new" beck cd. it must have been freshman year of highschool and while everyone loved mellow gold--it was officially cool--not too many kids were willing to follow me down this path. of course, i grew to love it, and though i was unaware, one foot in the grave became my introduction to calvin johnson (i remember making the connection after buying my first halobenders cd).

i still love that song--"hollow log," it's called, maybe?--with the line: "walk around with a broken leg and a hundred dollar bill"...i can't remember the line that precedes that one, so alas, no rhyme for you.

the Coil ANS 3cd+dvd boxset came in the mail today. i preordered it like 6 months ago and they finally shipped them, after innumerable delays, last week. i must say im really liking it so far. its 3cds of warm analog drones made with the unique ANS synthesizer, which is a one of a kind synth invented by this russian guy in the 50s that translates drawings directly into sounds. if youre into the drone its well worth looking into the set. also its a lot less cold and menacing than Time Machines thus far. more organic and sort of sprawling and pulsing. to give a comparison to their other cd of analog drones.

got this for free today. its a 2fer of Exhorder's two albums, Slaughter In The Vatican (fuckin amazing cover on this one) and The Law. apparently pantera completely ripped these guys sound. dunno, ive only listened to Slaughter... so far and it was totally fucking awesome neck snapping thrash. we'll see about The Law.

how much was it? i physiologically NEED a Coil DVD.
i didn't think Time Machines was menacing so much as it was an entity created to take you somewhere you've never been, regardless of your consent. it wasn't a dangerous place, just kind of creepy.

i believe it was 30 pounds, whatever that is in dollars these days. the dvd isnt as great as i hoped it might be. it basically is like an hour of somehwat neat looking winamp visualizations set to the drone. i mean its not bad or anything, i was hoping for more though (especially having seen some of the really cool animations/video loops they had going during the live shows of theirs ive been to). i would still say the set is well worth picking up if youre into coil and are needing some quality drones in your life.

so i guess this will mostly fall on deaf ears but this cd is a fucking monster. the first album is straight out balls to the wall thrash of the fast (very fast) and mean variety. the 2nd cd is still rooted in that style but they add in a healthy dose of early pantera style ass rocking riff fests, some funky bass parts here and there, and a pretty killer sabbath cover.

also there is a track called Anal Lust where the chorus goes "ANAL LUST!/UP THE BUTT!"

also i think i mentioned it before but it bears repeating that the cover of "Slaughter In The Vatican" is so great. i wish i could find a large version of it online.

in conclucsion, if you like thrash and rocking out you should check this album.

dude, i'm with you on that exhorder cd. i only have a dub of slaughter in the vatican that i got from a friend who's really into obscure metal of all types, but i can assure you that i agree--it fucking RIPS. maybe i'll pick up that cd collection sometime. i can't imagine that it isn't worth the retail price.

how'd you manage to get it for free though?

this guy i know was selling some cds so he could pay his rent, but the store wouldnt take the exhorder cd because it wasnt in their store database, so he gave it to me. i cant fathom why he wouldnt just keep such an awesome album but hey, whatever. my gain i guess.

This is a call to all. Time we started up the Black Hand Music Collective and set our sites on Franz Ferdinand! We will plunge the Top 40 into a world war!

For the joke of it!

Why else? I don't know. I don't really mind that song except sometimes I think it's the Modest Mose song and I'm disappointed. Also I think the two videos are very similar, but that's what I get for watching MTV.

Point is, if we do go after Franz Ferdinand, we'll have to ask for ID first.

I'm tired.

Sure 'nuff, Ah_Pook!  I can't really hope to catch up with the history of metal, but I won a sales contest at work and have a nice chance to fill in some holes.  Nice how schlepping new age & worldbeat & smooth jazz wholesale subsidizes my black/death metal binges.

Furthermore, just ordered, pending delivery:
    Leviathan, Tentacles of Whorror
    Reverend Bizarre, Harbinger of Metal
Asunder, A Clarion Call (funereal doom featuring John Gossard of Weakling and strings bits from members of Amber Asylum!)[/list]

i haven't really heard much of the more recent robyn hitchcock stuff, but this looks intriguing, with gillian welch working on it and the dylan cover.  i love his more acoustic stuff.

I skipped the Soft Boys reunion and Robyn Sings, an entire double album of Dylan covers*, but last year's Luxor is very good  -- not his best songs by a stretch, but a beautiful, intimate "man and his guitar" recording.  I'm really keen to hear this new collaboration.

luxor sounds pretty cool--they have it at the library, and i now must check it out.

i actually liked the songs off the soft boys'  nextdoorland that i heard.  i thought they did a good job of recapturing the feel of underwater moonlilght.

robyn's touring in november, he's even playing with jonathan richman in minneapolis.  i'm excited.
