to clarify my position: the heavy handed social commentary is not why i rank dawn low in my personal zombie pantheon. it has more to do with the bad zombie fx (mostly, there are some key exceptions) and the fact that its about 5 hours too long. also parts of it have aged horribly. still an alright movie just not nearly my favorite.

took my semi-monthly record buying trip to denver yesterday. slipped into waxtrax II just after they opened so i could get first crack at the new arrivals in the used vinyl section. they buy used vinyl on fridays and saturdays (and tuesdays), so it stands to reason that the best day to shop around is sunday--once all the new acquisitions have been shelved--and the earlier the better. this was my first sunday trip, and though i knew i couldn't drop $140 like i did last time (i'm already way behind paying for my music this month), i had high hopes. i was especially hoping to find some albums by bands i discovered recently in the
left of the dial: dispatches from the 80s underground
box set...i'll put asteriks by those...
vinyl
aztec camera ,Aei
high land, hard rain
*
the band ,Aei

elvis costello ,Aei
imperial bedroom
miles davis ,Aei
the man with the horn
miles davis ,Aei

michael jackson ,Aei

king crimson ,Aei
starless and bible black
orchestral manoeuvres in the dark ,Aei
architecture & morality
*
pink floyd ,Aei
a momentary lapse of reason
queen ,Aei
a night at the opera
roxy music ,Aei
avalon
roxy music ,Aei
country life
(w/ edited cover photo, dammit)
siouxsie and the banshees ,Aei
once upon a time: the singles
*
squalls ,Aei
rebel shoes
(first recording i've ever come across by this old-school athens pop band)
the the ,Aei

*
U2 ,Aei
boy
wall of voodoo ,Aei
seven days in sammystown
*
XTC ,Aei
the big express
(the only one i didn't have!)
almost half of those albums were on my amazon wishlist. sweet.
oh, and total pricetag: $69.14 (waxtrax) + $12.88 (jerry's) =
$82.02
not bad!

I gotta say, nicely done. I smiled and did a little dance for your music taste--no, really, I did. A fine balance of the classic and the new. Bam baby!

An upcoming concert always calls for an anticipation of sound, non? So Thursday is the Washington, DC showing of the Junior Boys, Ratatat, and Mouse on Mars tour. I had Ratatat (used bin already, ha!), and I've been searching the local shops for Junior Boys, to no avail, but I did get niun niggung from MOM. I'm jamming away, zitsa pruddy geed.

Enslaved - Vikingligr Veldi. their first album, originally released on the infamous Deathlike Silence label. apparently it was unavailable domestically for a long time, this is a nice recent Candlelight USA reissue of it which tacks on their debut EP Hordane's Land (originally a split with Emperor's first EP). later enslaved is some of my favorite metal but ive never heard any of their early stuff so i figured it was time. word is its high quality.
Darkthrone - Sardonic Wrath. their new one, just came out late last month i think.
and the wizard has their self titled first album on the 2nd disc, the original release was a single disc i do believe. i dont know if its remastered or anything.

interesting, i guess my friend has the rerelease then, because his is two discs and over 90 minutes long.
also, i've got "hordane's land", and it's rather repetitive. the first song on it is 15 minutes long and has exactly ONE riff. i like "frost" and "eld" a lot better.

that sounds like something i could get into, if its pulled off well. we'll see i guess. my plan is to go through and get all their albums, since ive been on a serious Enslaved kick recently.

i'm tellin' you. this fucking town and its infuriating fucking record stores.
there's this place called rock'n'robin's, right? and despite what the sign says about "CDs, records, and tapes: buy, sell, trade", it's all basically a front for their drug paraphernalia business. they sell every kind of pipe, bong, and hookah in existence. they sell blacklights and beaded curtains. they sell flourescent bob marley posters, and shirts and hats and pants and wallets and bandannas and necklaces and rugs and pillows and lampshades and purses and socks and backpacks and a hundred thousand other ridiculous things with marijuana leaves either painted, sewn, printed, or stamped on them. it's that kind of place. so anyway, they do have a little music, mostly of the stoner persuasion...lots of frank zappa, bob marley, and neil young (a travesty). but in general, the CD section may as well not even be there. the used vinyl section--there's nothing new at all--is a little larger, but the prices are complete nonsense. they basically use best buy's pricing strategy: just about everything is $12 bucks, and any price you find above or below that is more or less entirely arbitrary. of course, keep in mind that these are used vinyl records, most of them in poor shape...not brand new sealed CDs, like you find at best buy. old, beat-up copies of bad company and hawkwind albums for 12 bucks. shit like that. so for all these reasons, i had sworn never to return.
BUT...they do have a copy of david bowie's
low
on vinyl, and it's the only copy i've ever seen. $12. still way more than it would be at wax trax or the finest (the former is in denver, a great place, the latter is a different store, a little better, here in fort collins), but reasonable when you consider what it probably goes for online. anyway, i listened to a burned copy of this album last night, and dammit, it may not be the best album of the 70s (i'm looking at you, pitchfork), but it's pretty fucking great. and it's the only berlin-era bowie album i don't have on vinyl. so i want it, and because i didn't want to pay $12 for it, i flipped through my records and pulled out a short stack of duplicates (albums i already had on cd) and inessentials. it wasn't a bad stack. it included
blonde on blonde
, bruce springsteen's
nebraska
, a sinatra box set, blondie's
parallel lines
, some abba, some ac/dc, some other stuff. i figured if i could get 4 or 5 bucks for all of it, i would gladly pay the difference for
low
. so i drove over before coming to work, checked inside to make sure it was still there (it was), then walked back out to my car to pick up the stack of records. i waited at the counter for a few moments, contemplating the cute little display of designer ziploc baggies FOR SELLING DRUGS!!!, then a young pregnant woman came over. i said, "i want this"--pointing at the bowie--"and i have these to trade." but no, no, no. it couldn't be that fucking easy. she didn't do the record buying, she said. but i'd seen the owner walking around already, and i asked if there was someone else who could do it. "well, she's here, but she's busy right now." what the fuck? not only could this employee not handle this easy transaction, but the person who COULD was THERE AT THE STORE but was TOO BUSY?!?!? are you shitting me? THIS IS A FUCKING BUSINESS!!!!!! A BUSINESS THAT SELLS AND BUYS MUSIC, GODDAMMIT...in addition to whatever the fuck else they do that's so barely legal it shouldn't be. pregnant or not, i wanted to do something ugly and spiteful to this woman. i just wanted the fucking bowie record!! "so," i ask, trying to keep calm, "when can i come in later?" "she's just so busy." ARGH! apparently, my only option was to leave MY fucking records at the counter, along with my phone number, and sometime in the future, after some indefinite period of time had passed, i
might
get a phonecall informing me of whether or not the trade was possible. absolute bullshit. i told her that sounded like an awful lot of trouble for a single record. "there's nothing i can do," she said. so i shook my head at her, swiped my records off the counter, and stormed out. fucking GRRRR!
and i've already checked ebay, and apparently nobody that doesn't live in england is selling this record, and the blokes that are selling it charge too much for shipping. so if i want it, and i do, i'm probably going to have to go back to that fucking wanna-be opium den and lay down the twelve clams.

i should really buy a bowie record one of these days. my faves are Diamond Dogs and Hunky Dory.
recently:
Also Stars - 'Set Yourself On Fire', which I can't find an image for.
I've finally got all the Steely Dan CD reissues; it's been at least 2 years since I've heard Can't Buy A Thrill, and it's so damn good.
All the old Bruce Cockburn albums are reissues as well, with bonus tracks, liner notes, slip covers, everything. I already had six on CD; i might just give them to my dad, unless anyone here wants some 70's Cockburn albums..? i've got them for the taking.
Any Damon and Naomi fans? I think I'm the only one buying their records.

davy, i'd have to say that $12 is too much to pay for
low
, although it
is
a great album. while i maybe wouldn't hold it up as the
greatest
record of the 70s, it is among the best for sure. seems like it's a fairly common find in these parts for $3-5. If i see one for $3 this weekend i'll pick it up for you.

this was actually yesterday, but my internet at home is down, so this is the first opportunity i have to post about it.
bjork - vespertine
prince - 1999
got both of those, brand new, for $8 each on cd. there was a section of marked down cds as an endcap in tower with ALL of these great records in it. my roommate picked up the first violent femmes and "loveless" by my bloody valentine for $8 each, but i already have both of them.
then from the 3-for-$10 cassette bin, i got:
bill cosby - to russell, my brother, whom i slept with
bjork - telegram
prince and the new power generation - diamonds and pearls
mudvayne - l.d.50
nas - the lost tapes
...and richard pryor - bicentennial nigger, the cover image of which appears to be nowhere on the internet.
not bad for $36.

justin, that would be enormously kick-ass of you. i'd be glad to hook you up with something in return if i could. any of those records mentioned above (the ones i was planning on trading in) are fair game, and i've got a vinyl copy of eno's
taking tiger mountain (by strategy)
laying around that i don't know what to do with.

This batch fills all kinds of holes in my heart. It's kind of overwhelming when I buy this much good music ALL AT ONCE. Perfect records for the impending fall and the Milwaukee-Chicago Amtrak route.

in celebration of the fact that i finally have my stereo, and most importantly my record player, in working order again, i decided to stop by the local vinyl-carrying indie record store tonight. they didn't have anything in the new section i wanted to pay new vinyl prices for (the joanna newsom 12" was $15.99, which is more than i paid for the cd at the same store--how stupid is that?), but i pulled out a ton of stuff from the used section. however, since i hadn't heard most of it, i listened to it all first, and most of what i pulled out (the sultans, chris bald 96, kingface, burma jam) sucked. the torn apart album i found ("10 songs for the bleeding hearts") was ok, but not as awesome as the preceding ep i have by them, and therefore not worth the $8 the store wanted for it. i ended up getting the following:
neil young - broken arrow (used cassette)
dead beat - the innocence of nihilism 10" (i listened to this simply for the reason that the record was on per koro, a label that released the lion's share of the great heavy, brutal, metal-influenced hardcore that was coming out of germany in the late 90s. it is every bit as awesome as the more well-known records on that label, such as albums by morser and systral)
planes mistaken for stars - fuck with fire 12" (used to have this on cd years and years ago, but i somehow managed to loan it out and lose track of who had it. i wouldn't have rebought it if i had liked some of the records i'd never heard before, but since i hated almost all of them, it became worth the purchase)
total expenditure, including tax: $15.75. not bad.

Carcass

Alex Chilton, 19 Years: A Collection (Was listening to this and my wife came in, dragged our half-sleeping cat onto her lap, and danced his front paws to "
Bangkok
