Quote
Calvin and Hobbes is unquestionably one of the most popular comic strips of all time. The imaginative world of a boy and his real-only-to-him tiger was first syndicated in 1985 and appeared in more than 2,400 newspapers when Bill Watterson retired on January 1, 1996. More than 30 million of the 17 Calvin and Hobbes books (all published by Andrews McMeel) have been sold. And now, we're pleased to announce that the entire body of Calvin and Hobbes cartoons will be published in a truly noteworthy tribute to this singular cartoon. Composed of three hardcover, four-color volumes in a sturdy slipcase, this edition will include all Calvin and Hobbes cartoons that ever appeared in syndication. This is the treasure that all Calvin and Hobbes fans will seek.

I don't even care about the price. Consider it purchased.

This could be the greatest thing--short of Watterson coming out of retirement--to happen to comics ever.

It's funny--just yesterday, I was poking around the web hoping to catch word of anything Watterson/C&H-related stirring.  Saints be praised.

$100 seems quite modest.

I still have all the old collections from when I was much younger. Still looks neat, though. Christmas, maybe.

You totally spelled Calvin wrong, too.

Oh my god. I think I have most, if not all of them anyway, but gosh, brand new and consolidated.

The picture you opened with made me a happy panda as well.

I'm still not sure how I feel about the nature vs. nurture debate, but I can definitely say that if it hadn't been for Calvin and Hobbes I wouldn't be half the person I am today. For a confused adolescent, what better introduction could there be to a baffling and idiotic world? It's a ridiculously literate inquiry into life under the guise of a children's comic. Children's comic! Who are we kidding? There are adults who haven't gleaned the importance of these three-panel wonders. I nominate Watterson for a Nobel prize on the basis of writing the most humane work of literature ever concocted.

[And it was funny as hell. He did good to get out before that stopped.]

I want to teach a college course on this shit one day.

It really speaks volumes that that picture alone is enough to completely turn my insides to jelly.

I hope it contains the full color stuff that was in the treasury editions: The longer comics, the poetry accompanied by watercolors, the rhyming horror bit.

I own all the material, although it's all currently at my mom's house in New Jersey. Which, at the moment, is bumming me out: This is stuff that I should have in my home, and even though I do have a roommate with his own volumes, my house wouldn't seem redundant were we all to have complete collections.

One of the best things ever.

I got Something Under The Bed Is Drooling for Christmas when I was...seven?  Really young anyway--and never looked back.  I'm really with nobodaddy in that I believe that Bill Watterson helped nurture my early reading skills and boosted my vocalbulary a hundredfold.  I moved on to other books, but every year, there was another Calvin & Hobbes collection to look forward to.  This continued well into high school.

At one point, I had them all.  I lent The Essential... to some dude way back in middle school and never saw it again.  I was pissed--I can't even remember what the big opening piece was.  The bigger, later volumes (starting with Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat and on through It's a Magical World) are six feet away from me right now.

But my copy of Yukon Ho! is badly milk-damaged and the rest are in similarly poor shape from years spent at their pages.  I can't wait for this collection.

yeah, my moms has all my old copies of those books as well, and i am with nicholson on realizing suddenly, "hey, those should be HERE!"

i'm still probably gonna buy this set, though, because i think i'm missing some of the collections.

i really hope they include that last book that watterson did, where he wrote essays to explain certain things that went on in the history of the comic. i.e. uncle max only ever showing up once, and etc. those were really interesting, and i don't think i have my copy of that book anymore (again, need to go to the parents house and check).

As this is going to be a really big compendium of the work, I kinda doubt those essays'll be included--could be wrong.  If you can't get that book back from your moms (I was actually reading through that one last night, the 10th Anniversary book), I've seen them at Waldenbooks and Borders for like six bucks.  I think that's how I picked my copy up.

What I want--and was upset that it apparently wasn't in print for very long--is the book that came out to coincide with an exhibit of the comic he did at Ohio State.  I'd be really interested in getting my hands on a copy of that.
