Yeah, dude, red stripe is where it's at. It's pretty cheap (here at least) and tastes great, and I don't get sick of it like I get sick of Stella Artois or something.

We are boozy enough (except for Andrew) to have a dedicated topic for alcohol conversations such as: Am I stupid for having spent $35 for 750 ml. of Chopin Polish Potato Vodka? What are your favorite drink recipes? Etc.

at the winery where i work, a 350 ml bottle of icewine is about 50 bucks canadian, which is like 38 US, and people buy the stuff up in cases.

Red Stripe is an excellent gateway drug if you're trying to get someone into quality beers.  Very drinkable and a damn sight better than the typical macrobrew.

Unfortunately, I am a huge fan of English- and Belgian-style ales, and I live in a small town.  You can't get any decent beer at any bar in town (even the bar that brews its own, as it brews it for the lower common denominator, which means as little flavor as possible), and the best beer selection in town is at Osco.

Which I suppose is why I spent about $80 on 13 bottles of beer when passing through Springfield recently.

Mmmmmmmmm.... beer.

damn, this makes me feel a tinge guilty. we have a BevMo right across town. it's like a porn shop, but for alcoholics. they have aisles dedicated to specific types of alcohol. ex:/ the tequilla aisle. the vodka aisle. three beer aisles, mostly imports and hard-to-finds. the prices are reasonable too. they also have a wall of micro-brew sodas, a couple dozen types of sake, and a rack full of those mini bottles of liquor you find in aeroplanes. you'd think the clientele would be on the uppity side, but it's a pretty well-balanced lot. otherwise i wouldn't go.

here, have your shit delivered: http://www.bevmo.com

update: good call. i tried red stripe, and it won me over. not only a very smooth lager, but the lzadies also kept saying "oooo... who brought the red stripe?" in very sultry voices. so, yeah. two points for the stripe. it even drinks well at room temp, in a pinch. i drank someone's half-empty bottle that was sitting around, and it went down quite well.

so, yojimbo... was that a lambic you were holding? or what.

No, it is a Belgian ale, though.  Chimay is a Trappist brewery and I believe the red label would be considered a dubbel.  Most people like the blue label best but the store only had a couple of the smaller bottles of those--which I bought of course and drank on a previous weekend.

fuck it. let's talk about booze some more.

promptly list your preferred:

- gin
- tequilla
- vodka
- rum
- brandy
- or even beer.

what & why, of each. i'm thinking of experimenting more with rum and/or gin-based drinks, and want to invest in some primo shit.

For gin, you can't go wrong with Sapphire as your default high-class bottle. Though I also recommend you pick up a bottle of Hendrick's; that's a great gin.

Did I already discuss this?

So today, I bought some Laphroig scotch.  It tastes... interesting.  Cetainly quite distinctive.  If by "distinctive" I mean "like turpentine".  Nevertheless, I think I'm enjoying it.

Also bought a little sample-pack of various single-malts as an Xmas present for my dad.  One of them is Clynelish, which I'm happy about, as he's never tried it and it's my favorite scotch so far.

By "distinctive" you mean "like burnt peat and seaweed." Because that's exactly what it is.

Both of these tastes seem tobe there, but there's a slightly chemically taste, as well.  I think it's turp, but all I can say with certainty is that it's a scent I haven't experienced since I was oil-painting on a regular basis.

Laphroaig has always been one of my favourite whiskies, but I can't remember a taste of turps. Of course, that means I shall have to buy a bottle to investigate this. Purely in the interests of science.

ps. A bottle of Laphroaig, not a bottle of turps.

Despite being more into whiskeys than vodka these days and not generally a fan of flavored vodka, when I was at my parents' for Thanksgiving I tried some Hangar One Kaffir Lime Vodka. That stuff is seriously amazing. Until now, Grey Goose was my favorite, but no more. I suspect it's absurdly expensive though and probably not in my budget range.

A friend of mine is a wine and spirits regional dude for a NJ grocer.  He solved an $11,000 error on someone's account sheet and they gifted him with a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue.

Which he is bringing down the next time he is visiting.

I've been trying out various single-malt scotches for over a year now, and I haven't been disappointed by any of the ones I've gotten -- until now.

"Tormore" is watery-tasting and a little sour and not very flavorful at all.

Tormore, I give you TWO THUMBS DOWNWARD.

While I have great love for other whiskeys, especially bourbon (Pappy Van Winkle's anyone?  Or Woodford Reserve, at least?  Oh, Turkey's all you got?  Is it the 80 or the 101?  I'll be there in 20 minutes), I cannot tolerate scotch.  It gives me the same bad burn that tequila does.  With one exception:  Knappogue Castle.  Insanely smooth, as scotch goes.  That said, if you're tryingto convert someone to the wonderful world of whiskey, just start them on Jameson.  Everyone loves Jameson.

Whereas expensive gin is the only gin worth drinking, buying expensive vodka is pointless.
