lemme tell you what's making me happy right now
so last monday we had the first big test in art history 101. lots of memorization and stuff required. i had paid attention in class, so i knew all the ideas, but i had no idea what anything was called or where it was from or when it was made or anything. i barely read any of the book, not that i wouldn't have liked to, but i've been real busy i guess. so i go into this test fully expecting to fail miserably, and maybe if i flew right for the other two tests in the class i could average it out to a respectable grade. i completely guessed on
every
multiple choice question, and bluffed my way through a couple comparison and contrasting pages, which were easy enough since i'd paid attention in class and knew all the basic stuff about what they symbolised and how they were used and whatnot, but yeah i figured i was looking at maybe a 25% grade in the end ..
got the tests back today. i got an a-. the highest grade in the class. and people were studying flash cards like right up until testing time. just guess after guess was totally right, and the teacher ate up my little essays
, and then, walking home, i found a store that sells huge bags of really good popcorn for 99 cents.

Haha old kentucky shark, I had a similar situation this past week. 'Cept this was for my 'Balkans Since the Second World War' class, which is obv. harder to bullshit than art history. Also, my proffesor was a diplomat in Yugoslavia for like 12 years... so it's nigh on impossible to bullshit him on anything.
Anyway, I had this paper to write about the Greek Civil War... I remember posting here about it a few times, because I was doing it all the night before. I didn't know a thing about the Greek Civil War prior to this... because I had been pretty lax in my studies.
Anyway, midnight I start the paper... I'm researching, drinking coffee, cursing myself and the fact I do this EVERY TIME...
But the paper got finished about 5 minutes before class. I used the Greek Civil War as a metaphor for the Cold War to come... which was a jive that the prof. was totally all about when he read it. So I completely researched and wrote this giant 300-level history paper in one night. And aced it, too... oh man, THAT'S luck, right there. Fate was lovin' me that night.

yeah, like, EARLY Greek history... I don't know too much about the revolution, but I've seen the buildings in Athens that used to be Turkish Mosques that are now movie theatres...
So I guess what's making me happy is the thought of that chocolate mousse that I had just down the street from the Acropolis....

Moments ago, a practice session with my silicon sparring partner:
I open with WINIER at 8d, Maven responds with EX 7f. My rack is EHOPSTU. Playing SUPERHOT through the R for 68 is most immediately obvious, but somehow my eyes are drawn to the EN on board. Was it Lasker who said when you see a good play, stop and look for a better one? Bang! P[EN]THOUSE, the P and H perfectly nailing the triple-letter scores, for 80.
And I have a tournament this weekend.
Happy basophil.

Well, you're welcome to it, even though your fiance doesn't seem too thrilled about the concept. Maybe I'll mail it to you... it wouldn't be the strangest thing I've ever mailed. (Remember the bacon? DO YOU REMEMBER THE BACON, OMFG!!!)
*consequently, a friendly reminder from They Live Deeply, These Vagabonds that we are eagerly awaiting a certain album of yours.

That is indeed really awesome, and I will be the first to get in the Ignorant Inquiries line and ask what it means.

I know absolutely nothing about anything save late '90s indie rock and how to overuse florid language so people sometimes think I'm smart (this is not an exaggeration), but reading about that gave me goosebumps. So, so awesome.
Where do you learn/hear about these things? (Not being sarcastic.)
What is making me happy: I just bought 6 Red Bulls, and am already 2 in. I am getting a tattoo on Thursday that will be only the 3rd tattoo (out of 13) I have that isn't depressing. In fact, it'll be the only outright uplifting one, because I really need a permanent reminder in case I start getting all 24-hour goth again.
Also: I bought an Interpol album on Monday and I really, really like it. Is Joy Division the band they always get compared to? It does sound an awful lot like Joy Division. But holy shit, "Slow Hands." I am assuming that was the single because it makes me want to break everything I own into a million pieces and then dance on top of whatever's left. Happy!

you should get
Bright Lights
. It's significantly better than
Antics
, which leaves me cold every time I try to get through the whole thing.

Math class.
Or the movie Pi.
What's making me happy right now is the thought of TSKS reading Marvel Boy and liking it.

This is what I've heard, and my original intent was to start at the beginning, but the record store was out of
Bright Lights
, and I didn't want to leave empty-handed. I heard "NYC" for the first time over the weekend and it kinda blew my mind.

Ah, see, I haven't taken a math class since 9th grade algebra. Which was 10 years ago. I think if there was more neat stuff like the Golden Ratio (or if my brain could comprehend even simple addition and subtraction, which it most definitely cannot) I might have paid attention more. Also, I will have to go and rewatch Pi, because basically the only thing I've taken away from that movie is the fact that Clint Mansell makes a cameo (and did the sndtrk) and oh, man, I love Clint Mansell.
