Yup- we're always grateful to be getting some action.

Also, I second Jolie Holland.  Still making me happy on a very regular basis.  And a new record due in the spring!

Seriously?  Export thyselves.  Please come over in ginger-haired droves.  We will appreciate it.  Two days later and I'm still saying "aye" and "fair play," not to mention my lifelong predisposition to saying "cheers."  Hopefully the boys I picked the temporary change-up off of thought it was more endearing than annoying.  Sigh.
(I imagine you've heard this sort of thing from American girls approx. 2349702937407 times; I am but a shallow lass)

That is the thing that's making me happy right now; I had no idea!  Also:  three days & two nights of The Hold Steady, starting in 100-odd hours.  Not that I'm counting or anything.

We're not all red-haired you know!:)   Though I certainly lean in that direction (especially the beard area- there's a pic of me somewhere on this site, but unbearded).  I've heard about the accent attraction before, but it's always nice to hear it again.  No-one ever gets tired of a little flattery, do they?
Did they not say 'sound' all the time too (meaning 'cool')?  I had a row with someone on another board about 'cheers'- he saw it as English, but you're right, it's a regular feature here too, especially when glasses are being raised.

Did you kiss a Frame?
Through a friend of mine I'm only two degrees of separation from them, and I've met Glen a couple of times.  That friend has duetted and shared bills with them plenty of times.  They're huge in Ireland, with the most rabid fans I've ever seen, but have only lately begun to make a bit of a splash abroad.  Being picked up by Anti has been crucial.  Though not really a fan, I'm happy for them to be getting the attention.

I suppose you know that Jolie's new one is tentatively titled 'Springtime can kill you'?  Cheery lass!
To compare to your Frames story, I met Jolie and her fella about two years ago in Dublin and saw her play a show in an apartment to about 10-15 people.  It was so great, and then I taught herself and the boyf how to play go and they taught me cribbage.  Very good people.

Aw, yes, I know you're not all red-haired.  But there are definitely more red-haired boys in Dublin than in Milwaukee, which automatically made me think I'd somehow managed to step off the plane and directly into heaven.  I stumbled around asking people for directions when I didn't need them just to hear 'em talk.
I don't recall hearing "sound" as much as "fair play" (though someone or other was saying "fair play" what seemed like every other phrase or so), but I was in something of a happily-dazed state, so I'm sure there's a bunch of stuff I missed.  I say "cheers" so often that all my friends make fun of me for it, like, "Dude, you know you're not from England, right?!"  It definitely garnered a few strange looks when I was in Glasgow for a week.

Definitely picked up on the rabidness of the fans -- there were a few people yelling in Gaelic, which was cute, though I'd no idea what they were saying.  Chicago's kind of the Frames' home away from home, and lots of Irish folks live in Chicago besides, so their shows here tend to be a bit more insane than they are in most other places -- though I saw them in London at the start of the year and people were lined up around the block, a few buying/selling tickets for 50 quid (twice the face value).
Easily one of the best live bands I've ever seen, and super-nice boys to boot.  It's a crime they've had to wait this long to sort of break into the American market, I think, although when you're presenting a song like "Fake" as your lead single, you may find U.S. labels cringing and holding off a bit more than European labels would.
Sigh.

Had no idea that she had a new album due, let alone the title -- brilliant!
Your go vs. cribbage story, meanwhile, is pretty much the most adorable thing I've ever heard.  You have house shows there, too?  For some reason I figured it to be an exclusively American thing.  Thanks for the heads-up, in any case.  And tell Glen that Stephanie from Milwaukee sends her regards if you happen to run into him again.   Very Happy

Re: happiness, and now, and me.

1. Being almost half of the way done with my senior thesis.
2. Manny Farber's jerkface comments about Maya Deren, circa 1946. Maybe not making me happy, but sure making me laugh.
3. Ornette Coleman.

THE SUN

THE SUN IS SHINING FOR THE FIRST TIME IN DAYS AND THE SKY IS BLUE

(I desperately need sunlight -- preferably constant, and falling gently upon my closed eyes and/or black hooded sweatshirt, to best absorb the warmth -- to survive without falling into spirit-crushing depression.  SUN SUN SUN SUN YAY)

WARNING  mountain goats content to follow

In music class just now, a girl talking about the malleable relationships between music/lyrics and stories (don't ask) says 'well my friend throop always sings me a song before seminar that has to do with the seminar, and for this last bible reading he sang some strange song about pigs running into water and how it was a triumph for them, and related it to the story with jesus, and i really liked it, the song i mean'

1. That reggae song on the My Morning Jacket CD.  That shit is awesome, even if it does sort of turn into a moon safari outtake.

2. I was just out with a ton of people at a bar, and a girl I didn't know said "wait--were you in that comedy show that we went to in April?" and I said "Yeah."  She said "Oh My God, you were ridiculously funny!" what she didn't know was that I wrote most of it, so that was sweet.

3. I'm actually, for real, for money (!) editing someone's book.  Starting today.  He just e-mailed me the first chapter and the introduction this afternoon.
