Well, when this started happening, I went and removed anything remotely non-essential.  I know codec problems are normally caused by corrupted/duplicate files, or too many different codecs installed on top of each other; and I think that could be the problem.  Like I said, the video was running even after I uninstalled every codec I have.  So I think the uninstallers didn't get everything.  Either that, or I got some malware in the course of websurfing.  Ad-aware finds nothing, and Spybot has started mysteriously crashing.  I was looking for some serials for programs on another machine a couple weeks ago, and those places can be dodgy.

Oh, yes I uninstalled it and reinstalled it.  I should have been more clear; Spybot itself runs and only finds cookies, but the updater always fails so the malware defs are out-of-date.

nah, there's no spyware.  I AM a dolt though, it turns out there were just problems with a couple specific files, and now that i've downloaded a few more, they all work fine in VLC.  Those couple releases were just crappy.  Thanks for your help guys!

Yeah, I thought it wasn't the files, because I tried like, 4 different ones.  Then I realized that even though they were different files, they were the same show and hence put out by the same release group.  It turns out that with this particular show, dark, unnamed forces have been seeding bad data.

I've had problems with codecs causing choppiness before, so I assumed it was the same thing.  Damn me!

Thirded.  I had some TV shows sitting around on my hard drive for months unwatched because nothing I could find would play them.  Finally, some Google-ige lead me to a magical little application called VLC Media Player. Life was good again.

There was a time when I did use WMP 6.4 with appropriate codecs and such and adamently refused to use any version of WMP newer than that, and I never really had problems playing anything, but then I found VLC... and it's just so damn efficient.

As far as I'm concerned, VLC is the only media player you ever need. Granted, the mac version is slightly prettier than the PC version, but whenever I've tried to skin the PC version, it blew up. Probably due to my lack of system resources.

But anyway, I use VLC and the ACE mega codec pack and haven't met a media file I couldn't play yet.

But it does everything I need it to do! And I don't care if AOL/Time Warner knows how much pornography I watch.

This thread is great because I can finally fix all those non-crippling computer problems that I have been living with/around for the last few months. Anyway, here's another one:

You know how when you go to open a file or something in a program, and that little dialog box pops up so you can select which file you want?  Well for some reason all my files in that thing are just jumbled up randomly, not alphabetically like I would prefer.  As a result, I have to right click and go to sort by name every time I want to find anything (when I open a folder in Microsoft Explorer, all the files are sorted alphabetically just as God intended).  I have a feeling that the solution to this problem is going to make me feel like an idiot, but what the hell?

It's just all the default stuff. I didn't change anything (well, that I can remember), and it just started doing this.

Well, I guess "just started" is a bit of an exaggeration.  Maybe 2 1/2 or 3 weeks ago.
