I have a problem that I think may come back to this "DivX files freak Windows the fuck out" issue (as discussed in the "i'm getting strange pop-ups..." thread):
Often, when I have a folder with a bunch o' videos in it, opening that folder causes windows explorer to crash. Mostly it happens when the folder is displaying thumbnails (which Windows automatically does if it recognizes a folder with all video files in it), but sometimes it will still happen even after I tell it to display icons instead of thumbnails. It's incredibly obnoxious.
This doesn't really seem to me like the kind of problem that can be "fixed," but I would be happy if ya'll surprised me.

there are a few ways to fix this but they're kind of intense compared to what heather marie did to fix her problem.

way #1:
go ahead and open a command window (start, run, type in cmd, enter)
and type the following, followed by pushing "enter":
Code:
regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll
and then
Code:
regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll
which basically removes the media and image previews.
way #2:
there's a registry key (the same one i mentioned in the other thread) that you can delete and it should take the problem away too, but i think we should try way #1 1st. (mainly because it's really easy to undo!)

So you can't do this while retaining image previews/thumbnails?
(and thank you so much for your help, by the way)

you can, but i'll need some info from you
obviously you're running xp, service pack 1 or 2?
what version of Divx do you have? (control panel, sounds and audio devices, the hardware tab and select video codecs and properties)

okay, go ahead and delete DivX 6.0 and go here:
http://www.free-codecs.com/DivX_Free_download.htm
and install 5.2.1
should fix it.

I know it's been said around here before, but I think it bares repeating: You, Alexandra, are a effing genius.
Edit: Also, I love me some candy. Almond Joy - food of the Gods.

hey alexandra, do you know much about codecs, then? My tv show rips are acting all choppy. I uninstalled everything and reinstalled it. The video runs smoothly up until I install the AC3 Filter for audio, then it adds audio and runs choppy.

How do I stop lagging in Alterac Valley when I hit the Alliance Zerg? Do I need new ram or a better video card or both?
