I am using their java client now, and it also won't connect.  Is this a firewall thing?

It's creeping me out.  There's too many voices all at once.  It's like being in my head, except that there's no unicorns.

yes, and tried another client, and the web based one on slashnet, and none of them were able to connect (note that I do know enough about irc to have properly filled in the server name, but beyond that know very little).

basically we're talking:

server name: Slashnet
server address: irc.slashnet.org
port: 6667
nick: another_max
channel: #lptj

Anything other than that, we're gonna have to get real specifica like.
