I bought my first guitar about a year ago before I ever really learned anything about them. Now that I'm playing fairly often and am half-decent with it, I'd like to get a nice one for myself. So my question:

What brand/style of guitar do you prefer and why? And as the title suggests, I'm interested in acoustics, but talk concerning electrics or other stringed instruments is quite welcome!

if you're looking for cheap with a nice sound, i suggest yamaha. for some reason, i love the way a yamaha acoustic sounds, and the neck is so gentle.

If money were no object, it would be Taylor all the way. They play INCREDIBLY, they sound awesome. And they're mostly all acoustic/electric, which is a nice benefit.

I currently play an Ovation from the 70s, which has a nice tone, but if I had the 2000+ to spend, it'd be gone in a heartbeat for a Taylor.

I own a Martin acoustic and  I love it dearly!  As far as electrics go, The Fender Jazzmaster is my favorite.

I own an acoustic Yamaha, which may or may not be complete crap, but which works alright for me. And I have an electric Dean, which is kinda crappy. Or not. I really have nothing to compare it to. All I know is that one of those mysteriously floating pickup things is held on by tape and the cords are always screwing up. I prefer the acoustic one.

my friend has an acoustic dean that is far less than comfortable to play. durability was also an issue. i thought it might have just been his. does anyone have a good electro-acoustic dean?

I gotta stand behind Alvarez and Alvarez Yari.  I've got a really nice one from the late '70s that plays beautifully.

I'm also a Taylor admirer, and am delighted at their Big Baby model, as it sounds enormous, has a really cool unfinished look about it and usually costs less than $400.  Wanna get me one.

I love my Martin 00-15. Small Mahogany body, super warm tone, surprisingly good bass for such a small body, and I got mine for under $500. Best musical investment of my life (and I've had quite a few).

I have decided to disown my claim that my acoustic Yamaha "may or may not be complete crap". It's a good guitar and has always worked well for me, and it'd be ungrateful of me not to endorse it. And so I do.

my dad has a baby Taylor, so i got a baby Larrivee(local maker, well regarded), and mine's nicer. It's got a good sound, warm, not too bright, and is wonderfully easy to move around.

I've got a cheap stratocaster too with a Vox amp and one fancy implanted pickup that's really loud and crunchy. i got it from a good friend of my dad's, who's last gig was playing 'randy bachman' in the current county-fair touring incarnation of BTO. good times.

I need to change strings on both of them, I think. it's been 6 months, and the Larrivee is definitely feeling worn. I play the acoustic a lot more.

i'm doing more fingerpicking lately, esp. old Fairport/Thompson stuff like 'The Great Valerio' and 'End of a Holiday', as well as 70's Bruce Cockburn. If anyone has a tab of Sandy Denny's 'Fotheringay', I'd be very grateful.

I play a Larrivee OM-3, which I love, though soundmen hate it 'cause its trebles are all muted-like an' stuff

I play a Guild M20 and would like to say that all Mahogany guitars sound absolutely beautiful.

My guitar is an M20 minus Nick Drake more or less.
