Okay, so I don't have much time, as I'm about to go out, but:  An Update:

I was just at a party, mingling, talking with friends of friends, and I raised what history will undoubtedly refer to as
The Ralph Wiggum Question.

So this guy next to me says, "HOLY SHIT!  I was just talking with some people about this last night!"  And I tell him that I got involved with this argument on an internet website, and we all discuss the Question for a bit.

As it turns out, some friends of his post on one of the other internet-forums that's begun to discuss the matter, and they started asking people at some other party yesterday evening.

The Question is spreading.  This gives me hope, insofar as it means that the more it spreads, the more likely it is that it'll get back to David Cohen somehow.  Which means that although clearly both interpretations are valid, we're a step closer to the elusive Authorial Intent.

Are y'all just some seriously lateral-thinking motherfuckers or what?  I actually refuse to believe that anyone actually agrees with Greg so much as they like his theory and WANT it to be true.  Which it clearly isn't, because it doesn't make any sense whatsoever.  And the argument that Ralph probably doesn't know what a Viking actually is seems pretty silly to me, even taking his potential learning disabilities into account.  I think Hh is right, and the operative word in Ralph's statement is clearly "where."  Ralph is not smart enough to understand what sleep actually is, and thus thinks it's a place.

I in fact think that this entire thread is a conspiracy on the parts of Greg, Crystal, and Freddy to confuse and bewilder the rest of the board.  I mean, I know y'all like to think outside the bun and all, but this is ridiculous.

I haven't been on the internet for the last four pages of this thread, but homosexual for that, jeb.

We should keep in mind the possibility that neither of these options are correct.
I like to think that some third, currently unrealized interpretation exists. Something to do with the Nicolas Cage.

The Question is spreading.

This immediately made me think of some kind of pre sci-fi/horror movie ad campaign. THE QUESTION IS SPREADING, COMING SOON.

To the argument that Ralph isn't aware of his 'Ralph-ness' and is not capable of metaphor:

1. There's a scene is some episode or another where (I think) Lisa gets a bad grade or something, and he says something to the effect of "Lisa is the new Ralph!"

2. The Simpsons often take humor from characters saying things that are way above their general intellectual level.

Still, overall I think the 'he dreams of being an actual Viking' interpretation is probably right as far as original intent goes, but I thought the same thing as Greg at first, and still like that interpretation.

I just want to address the meme thing:  I've seen a couple of people refer to this as a "meme", but it is not.

"Meme:  A unit of cultural information, such as a cultural practice or idea, that is transmitted verbally or by repeated action from one mind to another."

This is just an argument, or a discussion, or a quarrel.

Nope, just one of those guys that's sick of hearing any damned thing on the internet referred to as a "meme".

"Hey, you read that new meme in Rolling Stone?"

"Yeah, that was a totally excellent meme.  Oh, check out this blog, too, it's full of memes."

"Oh cool, meme meme meme."

"Meme meme."

"Meme meme meme meme."

Also, "millennium" is spelled with two n's and the new one should've been celebrated on Jan 1, 2001.

I just spent 15 minutes watching clips of Ralph in YouTube, and not one of the videos had the "viking" clip. I was happy and angry!!

How the hell did I become the champion of the literal interpretation?  It's all Erskine v. Ebben up in this piece.  (Nog v. Reject?)

Because you say "champion" when apparently "viking" would do!

I posted this on the front page of metafilter, and people got all rageful there, too.

metafilter has now picked this up and the other board has hundreds of new guests viewing the thread.  very weird!

people from foreign countries seem to all think it's the greg/my way because of the way it's been translated.

spacerace- that's where i've been for several years and i am not 15 or dumb.  though by reading some of the devil chicken posts i've learned that he may be 15 and is most certainly an idiot.

Wait.  So are we now fighting about the fighting on other boards?  This is way too meta for me.

can we please not do this?  it doesn't help anyone, and lptj should generally be a place where this doesn't happen, right?

I know!  I know!  I feel like I'm gonna need to pop open champagne or something when it hits 300!

crystal, I just want to say that I feel blessed to be a part of something that's simultaneously SO divisive and SO inconsequential.  I wish I could bottle this and sprinkle it in mall food courts.
