I'm not into the grind as much as Pook is, but I am all about 'Loathsome' and 'Heathen Temple'. Deathy grindy metal? I'll have me some of that.

I don't buy even close to the amount of metal as some here, but Phantom is the best hard album I've heard so far this year by a country mile. I like it more than both Prowler & Terrifyer. And I like those albums a lot.

i appreciate this album, if for no other reason than that it convinced me that grind isn't my thing at all.
which is kind of nice in a way, because that tells me that my recent affinity for death and black metal is more or less genuine...apparently i'm not just listening to metal for the sake of listening to metal.

im not hatin, im just disappointed and sad that a band i previously looked at as infallible suddenly dropped the ball so hard.
its not even that i think its terrible, just something about the direction they took the songwriting rubs me so wrong. i cant get into it at all. technically i can appreciate their talent on it, but its like im watching them rock out from beyond this giant bulletproof window of MEH.
i fire it up every couple weeks and hope this time itll click for me because they really are one of my super favorite bands but thus far it just hasnt connected at all.

Dude pook not to be all "look at me look at me" but I could kinda use a primer on grind as well, I have gone on record as not really getting it though I want to.
OK that is precisely all "look at me look at me" but look at me ok?

While we're asking, could I get a tracklist on this mix-to-be when it's ready?

I seriously don't get it, 'cause I've been listening since
Prowler
and I prefer
Phantom Limb
to both that &
Terrifyer
. Just find it more interesting, more moshable, less watch-how-we're-super-intense and more we-can-write-songs. It may help that I saw them do the shit live before I got around to listening to the album.

I mean, are you
sure
you don't have hater syndrome going? You gotta be on guard against that shit like herpes. Most cats won't even allow that it's a possibility, but if you're honest, you know you got a twitch in your face when you saw PD get the lead review on Pitchfork. The twitch that says "fuckin' lamers are gonna come to the shows now." Etc. And everybody saw this coming, it's been clear for months that PD was about to get some outside-the-scene love.
Just suggesting it, not accusing, but dude the fucking riffs & especially THE DRUMS (not to mention: the lyrics are, FINALLY, more interesting, though that's a bonus, it's not like I'm listening to them/singing along), this is a solid fuckn metal album.

Pook's not the only one. I haven't given it as many chances as him, but I found all the songs kind of lackluster. And some of them actually irritated me.
I've never been a huge PD fan, but I did actually end up liking Terrifyer pretty ok.

man PD has been pretty big crossover style since Terrifyer, and i dont read Pitchfork...
what are you trying to say here
? i think its awesome when people outside the metal scene actually get into some sweet shit beyond whatever "crazy" black metal band is the current flavor of the month. i mean how many times am i supposed to try to get into an album before im allowed to not like it? ive already given it wayyyyy more time than i usually would, just because im a huge PD fan and i keep wanting to get into it.
i will say that i entirely disagree on the lyrics on this one. still some sweet turns of phrase in there (and obv still much better than just about any other random metal band you wanna name), but on the whole i think they took a big step down from Terrifyer.
on a different note this mix is turning out kinda epic, and making it has gotten me spinning some really awesome stuff thats been collecting dust for a while. everyone wins!

yeah, if you don't dig it, you just don't, no harm no foul, I just have my antennae permanently up for dudes who get cold feet on a band as soon as they start to get successful...'cause it happens to everybody, and while obviously I have one or two semi-personal issues with this issue, the problem is so pervasive as to make me preemptively snarky about it. In metal, in indie, in dance, everywhere, as soon as a band actually gets good enough to do what they wanna do, everybody says how the last album was really the best one. It's annoying. But again, I prefer the live drums, and I thought Terrifyer's lyrics were kinda puerile "look how intense I am" stuff while "Girl in the Slayer Jacket" is fucking choice. And the riffs in "Heathen Temple," Jesus those're the best riffs this band has hit yet.
You're not one of them dudes I'm sure. OTOH you know exactly what I mean and this problem is especially acute in the online metal world.

i haven't checked out this album. i loved prowler in the yard but couldn't get into terrifyer at all.
i guess it might have to do with me still thinking of them as a grind band, when they seem to have gone completely metal. at least that's how it felt with terrifyer to me. i prefer my grind to be more chaotic.
they're still a good band as far as i'm concerned but i dunno.

i still haven't bought this so i hadn't seen the lyrics yet, but because of that comment i googled "girl in the slayer jacket"s lyrics and holy shit. that song hits home. i totally had friends like that in high school. some of them even ended up the same way. god, it gives me chills to think about.
