DAM
« on: Jun 26, 2007, 04:12:56 AM »

I finally got a hold of a full album, and honestly, I don't know what to think.  I feel evil and like, "Yeah!  Fight the Power!" at the same time.

Regardless of the politics, ya gotta marvel at the power of hip-hop.

edit:  It occurred to me that I should put in a link

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIo6lyP9tTE

though it's a little more  Shocked than is representative of their work, and the album I've got ("Dedication") is loads better by pure hip-hop standards (ie, I have no clue what they are saying, but it sounds cool).

edit again:  That video should be viewed in the context that DAM are from Lod, and so are Palestinians *with Israeli citizenship,* and hence occupy a weird in-between space that is always interesting to me.

The first half of that in particular was quite stunning.

Oh yes, and the treatment of Israeli Arabs is what I think the measuring stick should be for gaging the Israeli government's ethnic sentiments.

As usual, YouTube comments make me much more ok with ethnic cleansing than I would otherwise be.

edit: as for the music, I've often thought Arabic is supremely suited to rap, and I think this song goes some way toward proving that.  I've only ever listened to more 'traditional' Arab music, plus that cloying modern ethnic pop.

Man, in high school I knew these Bosnian kids who could rap like a MOTHERFUCKER.  Shit was amazing.  Apparently rap is the biggest thing ever over there, Dre is like a god.
