Accidental Life

Haven't posted here in a long while, but got the urge to share this morning. Must be sleep deprivation...
A couple years ago I asked somebody what Simon Finn was like and they said, "You wouldn't like it" so I believed my friend who I trusted at the time. It's true, now that I've heard his 'legendary' 70s record I'm not a huge fan (though it is pretty good) but... This month, in my hunt for something new that I actually like amidst a really lousy year for music (at least for things I like), I picked up Simon Finn's brand new album "Accidental Life" and, oh boy, it is one of the best acoustic/folk/singer-songwriter/whatever records I've heard in a long long time.

"Snowman"
My skin is white, my demeanor broken
Of average height, never a confidence broken
And take a look, you'll see that I'm a snowman looking out with my dark coal eyes
Little company in my snowland, but always a few arrive
When the lonely come, when the sad ones embrace me
With lips and tongue they murmur of things wasted
And she hated her mother who'd favored her brother
Her father had touched her, she thought her father might have touched her
But she's been seeing a healer, she says she's made progress
But her words weighed to water as her past speeds through time
And still they come, they promise famous throwdowns
With lips or guns in warzones or playgrounds
And he hated his father who'd bent and betrayed him
Who'd beaten his mother, who sent his dad packing
So now he hated her too
And he hates his job and an ex-wife he says pleased him
Though it's a decade ago she flew
So sometimes I'm happy I'm a snowman, with my plastic nose and dark coal eyes
And if it's true that I'm really no man
I still do what I can, I'm part of the plan
It's how I began, and for now I'm content to be alive

Sure, when I get a chance. Maybe a little later tonight. There's also a track on his myspace from the album called "Johnny Westward".

I'm unsure as to whether ryming 'broken' with...'broken' is a masterstroke or just an indication that he didn't have a ryming dictionary to hand. Also, what kind of person has a plastic nose to hand for adding features to a snowman?....I'm here all week pedantry enthusiasts.
