I bring them up mainly because of this:

http://www.amazon.com/Unbreakable-Retrospective-1990-2006-Afghan-Whigs/dp/B000N0LIBW/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/105-6274421-4522069?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1182191375&sr=8-1

The Afghan Whigs have been one of my favorite bands since Gentlemen came out when I was about 14. I never got a chance to see them live, because I was always to young to get into the clubs they payed when they came to town.  I honestly don't think I've ever met a person that gives a shit about this band but I would say that Gentlemen and Black love are two very influntial albums for me and I go back to them frequntly.

This Best Of is pretty great and I was excited about the two new songs that they recorded for it.  Turns out the new stuff sounds quite a bit like the Twilight Singers.

Anyone else dig this band?

Also this is the first time I've created a thread so please be gentle.

They're definitely in my top 5 favorite acts of all time.

It's a damn shame that you never got to see them live.  I was around the same age when Gentleman came out but I was able to get into a show.  It was a hell of a wake-up call as far as live performances go.  I still judge a lot of bands that I see today by that standard.  It was also great because Dulli came off the stage and out into the crowd, about to beat the shit out of some guy who threw ice at him (he's calmed down considerably since that period).

I will also still go out of my way to see The Twilight Singers whenever they roll through town.  I think I've seen them 3 times now.

I want to pick up that retrospective...

Having his head broken by a bouncer probably helped him along on that trajectory. I love the Whigs too, though they're nowhere near top-five for me. But the Twilight Singers have consistently bored me to tears, both live and on record. I haven't heard their latest album, but I just can't get into that group. I'm not entirely sure why.

Y'know I thought I remembered hearing something about that.  Oh well, you've got to hit rock bottom sometimes, right?

I'm definitely not as big a fan of The Twilight Singers as I am of the Whigs, but I haven't been bored by them so to speak.

As hard as I tried I could not get into Blackberry Belle.  I do like the new one pretty well, but I like the Twilight Singers considerably less than the Whigs.

I am very interested to see what Gutter Twins(Dulli's collab w/ Mark Lanegan)sounds like.

at no point in my life since i first heard it has gentleman ever been outside of my top 5 favorite albums. it's been one of the most consistently satisfying works of art i've yet encountered.

i love all afghan whigs albums...congregation slightly less than the others. twilight singers i dig, too, and i believe each of their albums has been better than the one before it. the greg dulli solo album didn't get a lot of credit when it came out, but it was one of my favorite albums that year.

i've always got one ear trained on dulli. i'm excited to hear the two new tracks, but not quite excited enough to buy the compilation.

Same here.  I heard one of the new tracks and it was pretty good, but I don't have the retrospective yet, if that tells you anything.

If by "last album" you mean 1965 then I certainly hope you are alone because I think it is uniformly excellent and it's probably my second favorite Whigs album.

I will say that I like the first Twilight Singers album better than anything else Greg Dulli's ever done.  But most people think I'm crazy on that point.

I don't remember how I first heard the Afghan Whigs--OH WAIT YES I DO--it was the soundtrack to My So-Called Life. They put "Fountain and Fairfax" on it. I got Gentlemen because of it and was totally scandalized, and then through a series of awful relationships came to appreciate it more than I should have but which was totally appropriate to like a 17-year-old. They are still one of the bands that I consistently and periodically go back to, and I love 1965 like nobody's business. I also love the Twilight Singers and am not sure if I can really compare the two.

Yeah.

I remember the first time I found myself standing on the actual corner of Fountain and Fairfax. I was like, "ho-hum waiting for the bus, la-la-la," then all of a sudden, I was like, "DUUUUUUUUUUDE!!!!"

Then back to waiting for the bus.

Twilight Singers were fun live, even tho we saw them at a really crappy venue. Man is sex wrapped in a sweaty shirt wrapped in cigarette smoke.

Also. the Afghan Whigs cover of TLC's "Creep" is just dandy.

Yeah, it's in West Hollywood. Which is technically an incorporated city, but you know, L.A.

It's also not nearly as sketchy as I imagine it was back when Dulli first copped there. Gentrification has done a number.

Well it's also the first Dulli-related thing I ever heard, so that factors in a bit.  Also I fucking adore the cheese.
