Mmm, comics. If Chris Ware had a uterus, and I was gay, he could have my babies.

I'm not sure if it's gay anymore once a uterus gets involved.

What about if it's a fake uterine cavity like Arnie's in Junior?

Has anyone ever read Alex Robinson's Box Office Poison? Jim Woodring's Frank series? Those are probably my two favorites / items that would follow me to a desert island. I like Chris Ware, but he has never really done for me what seems to for most. The same goes for Craig Thompson and Daniel Clowes, though I do appreciate their work.

Clearly the world of comics will never surpass the bar set by George Herriman's Krazy Kat, but I think Ware comes close, even though there are almost no similarities between the two works.
Clowes and Tomine may as well be the same person, style-wise, but they're both quite good as well. Anyone read the new Eightball? I think it's my favorite Clowes work yet.

And a uterus is not high on my list of what my perfect woman must have. At least, not at this point in my life.

My favorite comics are Pearls Before Swine, Get Fuzzy, Bloom County, Dilbert, the Far Side (rip), Doonesbury, and Foxtrot. All of which are conveniently located in the comics section of my local newspaper.

I just read the Maakies collection a couple weeks ago.
It, quite honestly, freaked me the hell out.
And I respect that.

Yeah, I started off reading the cool indie comics. But I've been sucked into superheroes for the past five years.
Seriously, my book shelf doesn't contain one single book because my addiction has replaced them all.

it's been a while since i creamed my panties over a comic book but vineyland, maakies, gyo, bangkok, johnny the homocidal maniac (and squee!), bob and george, jailhouse blues, and (i'll reluctantly admit) strangers in paradise, are all excellent.
seriously looking forward to bear suits. haha... "six-packs are the new picnic baskets."

You forgot that great staple of the indie comic world
Lenore
by Roman Dirge. The newest one has the best banana joke in history. Not a high bar, I admit, but I laughed my ass off. I love the stuff by Slave Labour.
The comics that made the largest impact on me were
Transmetropolitan
by Warren Ellis. They're cool.
There's some really good South African stuff, I know they are huge in Europse, perhaps you guys will know it - Bitterkomix. I can explain all the weird Afrikaans jokes to you...

the new
eightball
is the best single issue of a comic that will be published this year. i understand that daniel clowes needs to make money, but i wish he'd stop already with this movie bullshit and make more comics.
last really good comic i read other than
eightball
was rebecca dart's
rabbithead
, a breathtaking silent story that uses the unique ability of the medium to let several different but related stories co-exist on the page before converging at the end. experimental comics are rarely so readable, highly recommended.

oh and since we're talking slave labor i'll point out that evan dorkin is probably the most underrated cartoonist in the industry and anyone who doesn't buy the collected
bill and ted's excellent comic
is a fool. a fool, i say.

The new Eightball made my head hurt, it was so good. And it manages to be subtly political without making any direct references to current events. Ware gets all the press, but Clowes is the best guy working right now.
If, like me, you grew up reading shitty Peanuts strips in the 80s, forget everything and check out the new Peanuts collection.
If you want to see some more experimental comics, check out Kramers Ergot 4.
Holding my breath waiting for Panter's Jimbo in Purgatory.

My favorite comic ever was Dan Sweetman and Dave Louapre's "Beautiful Stories for Ugly Children, A Cotton Candy Autopsy". Great story, gorgeous art, and impossible to find anymore. However, thanks to the magical internet, you can read it online in its entirety.

Yeah, I dig comics. I like David Cross and Mitch Hedberg... I love Jonathan Katz, but I don't think he does too much stand-up anymore. I still think Chris Rock is a scream, and I really, really miss Bill Hicks. During the 80's comedy boom, I really liked Bob Rubin (him and his food utility belt chock full of sausages and hash browns) and Larry "Bubbles" Brown.... or did I misunderstand this thread's intent?
