I just watched the trailer for the forthcoming Robert Rodriguez 'Sin City' picture. Hawt damn. Mickey Rourke cuts a mean Marv.

I can't find it online anymore... I think I snagged it right before it got taken down at movie link. I'll probably upload it to my student account, and if I do, I'll let you know. It's about 25megs, and six minutes long.

I am, too... I usually have reservations about seeing my favorite books, comic or otherwise, adapted, but I've got a good feeling about this one. From the trailer, all the performances seem pretty heavy-handed, but I guess that's to be expected in the ultimate noir piece, and I'm sure it all comes together within the context of the film.

The casting, for the most part, seems a stroke of genius. Aside from Rourke/Marv, we have Elijah Wood as Kevin the Cannibal(!), Bruce Willis as Hartigan, my boy Michael Clarke Duncan as Manute (a role made for him), and the ever-enigmatic Benicio Del Toro as Jack Rafferty (the resemblance, as you'll see from the trailer, is absolutely striking). I'm less enthusiastic about the way they cast the female parts... Call me pessimistic, but I'm not quite sure Jessica Alba has the dramatic acumen or strength of subtlety to pull off Nancy's part without making it excruciating. Rosario Dawson is also out of her leauge, in my opinion, but as Frank Miller's female characters are so "challenging," I guess it's not fair to dismiss her sight unseen. (Well, mostly unseen...  Very Happy )

I just spent forty minutes scouring the web in search of that trailer for you guys... Guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and upload it when I get off work. It's worth the wait.

Oh, yeah: the mysterious Watchmen film will be coming out sometime next year, probably LATE next year, since filming hasn't started yet. All the rumors about Aronofsky being signed to direct were true, apparently, but for naught: Aronofsky skipped the bill, citing "time constraints." Now the guiding hand charged with the task of bringing one of the best-known and -loved comics of all time to the screen is that of Paul Greengrass. I've never fucking heard of him, either, but he directed 'The Bourne Supremacy'. Yeah.

In all honesty, I'd say Alan Moore is either very naive (which is probably not true) or just wanting vindication in allowing anyone to take another crack at adapting his work. Granted, the Hughes Bros. take on 'From Hell' wasn't without merit, but it left a lot to be desired... and then you have that other one, which I shall not mention by name. For a long time, it looked like Watchmen would never see cellulose, because Moore was sick of seeing his stuff mangled by studios and indifferent production teams looking for the quick & easy finish. If this is the case with Watchmen, there's no telling how bad it could turn out, it being so densely layered and fraught with so much ambient symbolism.

Lastly, in a veritable orgy of cool comics-to-film adaptations: V for Vendetta is slated for release sometime in aught-six. When I originally heard about this one, the buzz was that the Wachowski Bros. would be directing, and I do believe they wrote a rough script. IMDB lists James McTeigue as the director at this point.

In all honesty, I'd say Alan Moore is either very naive (which is probably not true) or just wanting vindication in allowing anyone to take another crack at adapting his work.

I'd say he's neither naive nor hoping for vindication, but simply unconcerned.  From his Onion AV interview:
O: Did you have any involvement in making [
From Hell]?
AM: No, deliberately. I think at an early stage, I was asked if I did want any involvement, but whenever there's been films proposed of any of my books, my answer has been pretty much the same. If someone's going to butcher my baby, I'd just rather it wasn't me. And also, I don't really have any great interest in writing for movies....They're a wonderful art form, but they're not my favorite art form. They might not even be in the top five of my favorite art forms. So my energies, I think, are best put into a medium I understand and enjoy and have enthusiasm for.
O: [W]hy permit a film version to be made at all?
AM: ...I suppose that the way I keep all that straight in my head is by keeping this kind of detachment, and by realizing that the film and the book are very different entities. Apparently, someone asked Raymond Chandler once what he thought of Hollywood ruining all of his books. And he took them into his study and pointed up to the shelf where they all were, and he said, "Look, they're there. They're fine. They're okay." That's the attitude I have to take. The film hasn't ruined my book.[/list]

After 'League' came out, I was told he got so pissed he swore off any future adaptations.

Okay, I don't think it's been talked about, but there's a comic that I can't find.  It was a very good webcomic that I haven't seen for a long time.  It had an archive of several years, and I think most of the time it was full page length (multiple framed).  One of the popular ones that got around the net was something about Ronald McDonald being evil or something.  Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

EDIT:  there was no central theme to the comic, either

EDIT AGAIN:  found it!

That's one of my absolute favorites... Too bad it had to end. I still read through the archive every now and again.

Lots of great stuff mentioned here already. Chester Brown's 'Louis Riel' series was very interesting, though brief -- 10 comics or so. It illustrated the story of a controversial figure in Canadian history and had battles, drama, the voice of God, and appealing, clean artwork.
