THIS THING I ATE

LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT IT

Here's a thread for interesting food we have obtained from the world around us, separate from the recipes thread, which should probably be dedicated to things we're making for ourselves.

My office-mate just got back from Europe, and offered me a chocolate from the box he brought in.  I selected one with marzipan inside.  It is delicious.

Over the weekend, I went home with Danielle to see her folks. There's this Thai place in Dayton that is effing spectacular. I had the duck basil... Hadn't had duck in about ten years, and I didn't like it as a younger man, so I thought I'd give it another shot. It was

INCREDIBLE.

I also had a bottle of Three Philosophers at dinner which contributed to me stopping by the hostess station and declaring that I'd just had the best meal I'd had in a long, long time. They seemed please, if a little frightened.

I am eating salmon dill cream cheese spread from Zabars.  it is contributing to my general happiness.  also, I had awesome yet cheapish sushi for lunch.  I should eat sushi for lunch every day.

I once did that when I was working round the corner from a very fresh, very cheap pick'n'mix sushi place in Charing Cross. Sushi for lunch every working day. I can recommend it!

I am seriously considering ordering a deep dish sausage & giardiniera pizza for lunch instead of eating the perfectly fine frozen burritos or whatever the hell they are that I have in the freezer.  Maybe I should have posted this in the pizza thread.  Maybe I should post this in a what the hell is wrong with me thread, if we had one.  I get these stupid ideas in my head and then I obsess over them until I end up doing them.  There is nothing wrong with frozen whatever the hell for lunch.  I mean, I wouldn't eat them frozen, I'd reheat them.  In the microwave.

Holy shit though Lou Malnatis deep dish with sausage and giardiniera sounds so fucking good.

I mean, I have to run down to the FedEx office in a while, and it's right across the street from Malnati's.  That's what got me thinking.

I do the same thing about obsessing over food, Jim.  And I'd eat the hell out of that pizza with you, too.  I've only eaten it once, but Lou's is some good shit.

I had a Neapolitan style pizza with arugla and roasted red peppers for lunch today - We have a pizza cart by my work and it's awesome.

I went with self-control (and laziness and impatience) and had the frozen thing (cheese enchiladas as it turns out) instead of ordering pizza.  They were somewhat tasty but greasy as hell.  I don't feel very well right now.  Just goes to show you that self-indulgence is the healthier way.

I did stop and get a pizza on the way home. There's a new(ish) place in town, wood fired oven, it's quite good. The interesting thing I found today, however, is from Trader Joe's. They have these little brownies that are sprinkled with sea salt. That's just a flat out genius idea.

All I've eaten in the past 24 hours has been cereal with soy milk. Everything else makes me feel like I'm going to puke. I'm starting to feel a little better, though, so I might make an omelet soon.

I think this weekend I'll try to eat something a little more exciting.

So I was having a shitty, shitty night, so I was like, "fuck vegetarianism" and had some White Castle.  I can't stress enough how worth it it was.

I was in town, and I had a sudden ice cream craving. Its raining and less than 10 degrees people! So like any girl who wants to lose weight, I waited an hour for the craving to pass. It didnt, so when I got off the bus I went and bought a cookiesncream trumpet from the dairy, and boy oh boy it was tasty.

*STUPID POST WARNING*

Let me tell you about this thing I'm eating right now.

It is called Tony's 3-Chili Chicken.  It is from a szechuan place in Chinatown called Lao Sze Chuan.  It is basically some flavorful chicken with a shitload of hot peppers.  Today rather than eat the nasty greasy frozen enchiladas for lunch again, I called Lao Sze Chuan and ordered this for carryout, then rode a 7 or 8 mile round trip to pick it up on my bicycle.  Now I'm sweating buckets, eating some spicy-ass chicken and drinking buckets of water.

A lunch portion is more than I can eat and costs $6.  Totally worth it.

Some friends of mine came to town tonight and we went to this vegetarian restaurant and I ate this giant awesome salad. As you might imagine, I'm not much of a salad dude, aside from taco salads and the like. This salad, though. It was huge and had about a million different vegetables in it. You'd be eating a long, enjoying your squash and cucumber and baby tomatoes and lettuce, and then all of a sudden you find a hidden pocket of broccoli and then you go to the other side of the plate with the roasted peppers and onions and you go to town on those and then you discover a secret cache of olives, and then all of a sudden as you're forking things you notice that a whole bunch of alfalfa sprouts and bamboo have appeared as if from nowhere. And then you lift up your garlic bread and there are honey glazed cashews and pecans tucked away. It was intense. And covered in herb balsamic dressing.

That sounds fantastic!

On the other end of the health spectrum, I had some White Castle last night.

I wanted to eat White Castle when we were in Louisville but Richard wouldn't let me.

I also haven't had deep dish pizza since being here.

I dragged home from work today and made this bagel sandwich-- a bagel between two pieces of bread.

maybe I should put like a triscuit in the middle.

i picked up chinese food on the way home from work tonight. chinese food from koreatown.

that means it comes with kim chi and some other random nonsense - jalapenos, some sort of yellow fuit thing mixed with onions that both taste kind of pickled, and a little container of chocolate syrup.

i'm not quite sure what to do with the chocolate syrup.

Weird!  The yellow stuff is probably yellow radish; it comes with basically every meal here.  I'm not a big fan.

Is the food American-style Chinese, or Korean-style Chinese?  They're completely different.

a bit a both i guess (but mostly american)?

the usual american sort of stuff, but my tofu/veggies are in a spicier, lighter sauce than i'm used to from the regular chinese places.

Alright, fair enough.  The most popular Chinese dish (as far as I know) over here is jja jang myeon, which is noodles in black bean sauce.  It's tasty!  It looks pretty disgusting, though:

Every time I eat it, I can't help thinking about Black Day.  Here in Korea, there are three Valentine's Day-type holidays:  February 14th (Valentine's Day), when women give chocolate to their boyfriends; March 14th (White Day), when men give candy to their girlfriends; and April 14th (Black Day) when single people get together to eat black noodles (jja jang myeon) and cry over how sad their lives are.

What I'd really like to know is, why do men get chocolate while women have to settle for candy?  That is a real shame.
