i saw those in a differen
chinese place in koreatown.
They actually looked really good.
and the kid eating them was kind of amazing. imagine a guy playing a didgeridoo. but it's a little chinese boy. and it's noodles.

three Valentine's Day-type holidays: February 14th (Valentine's Day), when women give chocolate to their boyfriends; March 14th (White Day), when men give candy to their girlfriends
Oh. You do have a very valid point with that last remark, but now this is a Valentine's Day I can get behind! I'll definitely try to talk my girlfriend into celebrating Korean's Valentine Day, then.

I hate to break this at you, but if you need a holiday as an excuse to buy each other chocolate, there's something wrong with your relationship anyway!

Not to mention the fact that L doesn't care that much for chocolate in the first place! (although her condition is slightly improving) Yeah, I guess the whole thing's a horrible lie.

so last night, i pulled a greg nog like a motherfucker. i was staring disconsolately into my fridge, knowing that i pretty much had nothing to eat in the house, and wondering what i was gonna throw together, when i noticed a container of leftover chinese food. i hadn't had chinese food in over a month, but my roommate orders it all the time. now, my roommate had as of last night been on tour for six days, and i was pretty sure that the chinese food was from the night before he left. so therefore, it was exactly seven days old. he's not gonna be back from tour for another week, so of course i thought to myself "this chinese food will surely go bad by the time my roommate gets home. there's nothing for it--i'm gonna have to eat it myself." i wouldn't have taken the chance on it if it were real meat, but it was mock general tso's chicken, so i figured it was fine. i dumped the by-then fossilized rice that was mixed in with the fake meat and made a fresh cup of rice, then microwaved the fake meat for a minute. i expected that it would taste kind of bland after being refrigerated for a week, maybe even a bit off, but lo and behold it tasted exactly like it would have if i'd ordered it fresh. success!

YAYYYYY! I am pleased!
I finished the cambozola last night. My roommate seemed to find the cheese unpleasant, but then I made us some delicious cumin-y fried chicken strips, and we ate them while watching The Rockford Files, so it was all good.
As for the cumin-flavored egg wash that I dipped the chicken in? I threw that in the fridge, and scrambled it this morning for breakfast.
And now you know... the
rest
of the story.

Can I post here preemptively to say I'm heating a crabcake right now, and I got some hot mango chutney i'ma eat with it? I'd make side dishes, but I'm just not hungry, and I think the crab cake is gonna be the bomb alone. I wouldn't mind some kind of asparagus or something mild, but...we're low on veggies here, and canned corn ain't gonna do it for me.
It's good. But the chutney is weird. It'is good, and it's got a very pleasant level of spiciness, but the flavor overwhelms the crab cake. Overall, I'm intrigued and pretty pleased.

this isn't a post about the thing i ate, but the place i ate.
Its called Lucille's Smokehouse BBQ. its at the new Tempe Marketplace which mountmccabe described in the 'shows attended' thread because they had the free Southern Comfort musical experience concert there this past weekend. the place is like the biggest combination of an open-air mall and a huge big box shopping center i have ever seen. but it looks like they're going to have a lot of variety as far as restaurants go, and this place was pretty good. you go inside and its like an elaborately recreated southern diner from the '40s. (they also have a bar that is more 'bluesy' with pictures of blues guitar players on the wall and such) now, i know being from the west this is probably like the whitest southern dining experience you can expect. all of the chain's other stores are in california or nevada. but the food's damn fine, you get your choice of like 10 different sides - i had the mashed sweet potatos which was mighty good - and the bbq's pretty decent too. you can even get fried okra as an appetizer. normally the idea of family style dining franchises on steroids would make me want to stay away from a shopping center like this, but the food and the ambience was cool enough that i think i'd go back any time.
so there you go. no rare exotic chinese food. just some good new old fashioned southern dining to please this suburban boy.

My very excellent coworker Harvinder just brought in samosas for everyone for breakfast. I had a veggie samosa with two different kinds of hot sauce. Holy crap was that good. I really don't need another but I might go get one anyway, at least once everyone has had a chance to get one. It was a pretty huge samosa too!
Good way to start a Friday!

That was one of the most pleasant things about my last office: lots of people brniging in food. It does just sorta cheer you up to know it's available, and folks are all sharin' and such.

There are no Cpn Douchecomets in my office.
There is one guy though who is a project lead who kind of yells at people a lot. I get along with him OK because he finally figured out that he's not my supervisor and he doesn't get to yell at me. And also that asking me nicely to do something gets it done a helluva lot quicker. But he yelled a lot and now my best buddy at work has quit because of him. Oh well, there are still plenty of cool people here and I'll be hanging out w/ Dean this evening after work hopefully.

Oh man, barbecue and samosas: a good day for us, food-wise.
Last night, coldforge and I went to this Austrian place for food and beer. I got the bratwurst and sauerkraut, he got a pretzel, and we split a meat-n-cheese platter between us. It was all quite delicious. We raised our beers and toasted to alex, as she's the only Austrian either of us know.

A TOAST TO ALEX!!!! I will drink one as well as soon as somebody gives me beer.
I had more samosas for lunch. Along with the smoked kielbasa I brought from home for lunch. They didn't really work that well together, but each was very tasty individually!

You're Austrian? Born and raised, or just ethnically?

So "dinner" just consisted of a shitload of ice cream followed by a bunless veggie burger. I really should have gone grocery shopping today.
