Most of the threads are religious debates.

Really it's just that there's so MUCH of it that makes me angry.  Like, you couldn't keep the completely off-topic religious debates to one thread, you had to make 50 threads for it?  This is even worse than when people just say stupid things about movies.

Ugh, I'm not even going to try to post any quotes.  It's not worth wading through the heaps of shit again.

Yeah honestly I don't know why anyone reads the imdb discussion boards. They're up there with youtube comments as the worst shit on the internet.

Just read an article about Control couple of days ago and it made me angry, despite not having seen it yet.
http://www.smh.com.au/news/opinion/nostalgia-a-spiritual-sickness-killing-the-punk-generation-and-theembers-of-youth/2007/12/20/1197740464705.html
I think his point is that it's ok to make films about the past unless the subject means something personally to him.

that article is poorly constructed and barely has a thesis. i don't really even understand the basis of his objection.

Seriously.  It's very confused and just as full of ridiculous statements.

Quote from: Andrew Frost (in the linked article)
The fact that the Joy Division story had already been told in 24 Hour Party People hasn't bothered the producers of Control. There's still plenty of money to be made from the story of a troubled young man who took his own life.

24 Hour Party People covered very different material than Control and did it in a very different way.

And, honestly, does he really think Control is a cash grab?  He really hasn't seen it, I guess.  Slow, brooding & sad, black & white != box office hit.

I'm also surprised that these are read; occasionally, I see something about some movie that intrigues me, but I'm stopped by the fact that you need to register for their site just to see the comments, let alone contribute.  I dunno, though, it sounds like I might be missing out on some entertainment.

I was always amazed at having to register considering the stupidity that logging in reveals. I got a login a number of years ago with another email address and it still works.

I had a mini-film-fest with some Wisconsin friends in which we each chose a movie. Friend #1 picked I Stand Alone, which he'd been lobbying me to see for years. I was not impressed; it was like a French version of Falling Down, yippie. I didn't like Irreversible, from the same director, either. Then Friend #2 picked Sicko, and I'm glad he did, because I'd been meaning to see it. Finally, I picked Lucio Fulci's New York Ripper, which neither of them liked. All told, not the most successful mini-film-fest of all time.

I hated Irreversible so much that I would gladly refuse to watch anything else by the same director.

man, irreversible. harf.

not that it was as awful as some of my friends think it was (morgan's opinion is a popular one), but i didn't enjoy it in the least. generally i like brutal shit, too. that movie was brutal in a completely unenjoyable way. and then the last half of it was totally boring and anticlimactic. it definitely gets a failing grade from me. and i probably wouldn't watch anything else by its director either.

Saw Juno today -- the overly smartass dialogue was a tad annoying at first, but yes, I ended up enjoying it immensely. V. sweet little movie. Also thank god for Michael Cera.

Excited about all the posi comments I'm seeing (but trying to avoid overloading on!) about There Will Be Blood. Eek.

Gosh, I have not seen many movies this year.

Oh I saw the BBC adaptation of Gaskell's North & South not very long ago (swooony), but I guess that's not technically a movie.

The Savages was not as good as I hoped but it was still good, and I got as much Gbenga Akinnagbe as I was hoping for, so that works too.

No Country for Old Men was almost as good the second time through. The person I saw it with kept hating on Kelly Macdonald's performance though.

Aw man...I liked it, but I'll admit that I have no desire to see it again.

yes. either the dialogue relaxed a bit or I just started tuning it out.

And my god. When I realized they were going to sing that moldy peaches song my heart just started glowing. They wanted it to glow and so I just let them have their way. I enjoyed it, overall! It made me want to hug someone. That's a rare emotion for me.

Saw Juno as well, and while I did like it overall, it annoyed me some in the predictable ways (like how they dealt with the abortion/adoption issue), but ultimately it wasn't so much the handling of choosing not to abort that irked me (though it did) as much as the glossing over of the emotional importance and difficulty in making the decisions and acts she that she did take. The cutesy thing is really legitimately cute and enjoyable in its way, but I think it kind of keeps me a little at a distance when I watch movies like that because it does feel more contrived, and that ultimately makes me more "meh" about them. I adored Allison Janney in it though. She is so underrated.

Also saw Sweeney Todd which is pretty much exactly what you'd expect from the combination of the Sondheim musical, Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. Whether or not that's a good thing I guess is up to you, but I thought it was fun. Not amazing, but I think that might have been the limitations of the original material as much as anything.

Gremlins is, indeed, an awesome Christmas movie.  When we were watching Alien vs. Predator the other day, and the Alien jumped into the swimming pool, I looked at my friend Carson and said "Uh oh. If this is anything like Gremlins, now they're REALLY fucked."

Gremlins is, indeed, an awesome Christmas movie.

But not the BEST christmas movie.  That honor is reserved for Die Hard.

am i an asshole for standing firmly by the opinion that "it's a wonderful life" is the best christmas movie? and that "a charlie brown christmas" is the best christmas-related tv special? i realize they're both played out as fuck, but still.

I love It's a Wonderful Life.  Always have.  I watched it again recently and though it always seems like the most family-friendly of movies, the part where George explores Pottersville has all the freaky nightmarishness of the best Twilight Zone episodes.  It's a classic.

And White Christmas does have Danny Kaye in it, and he's always been a favorite of mine.

But seriously.  Fucking Die Hard.  I don't even know where you guys are going with these arguments

I rented Eastern Promises the other night and watched it with a friend and it was one of the biggest creative disapointments of the year. I was quite honestly offended by the carelessness with which Cronenberg approached his subjects. Apparantly he thinks very highly of his work on the character's accents, but the film was riddled with mispronounciations of Russian terms, and the accents were attrocious, even within the context he provided through interviews (they all learned English in different places at different times in their life he says). Not to mention he got important things like culture, personal fashion and style and even presence wrong. It's almost as if he's never met a Russian before. I've seen more accurate depictions of Russians on USA after midnight. His depictions are so far off that his insistence on utilizing the underground language of Russian prison tattoos is nothing short of exploitation and nothing more. It's a cheap novelty to try and sell theater tickets and DVDs and it's far worse than sad because the man was once pretty brilliant.
