for the record, the o.c. started the whole "let's put 'hallelujah' over this emotional scene" thing. i read a really interesting blog entry about it once, which i believe was linked from this board by joseph scott. couldn't tell you what blog it was, though. but yeah, the guy who wrote it pointed out that season one of "the o.c." ended with jeff buckley doing "hallelujah", season two ended with imogen heap doing "hide and seek" (mmm whatcha say), and season three ended with imogen heap doing "hallelujah". that's some self-parody if i've ever heard of it.

The first time I saw someone create a heart-rending montage with Hallelujah over it was network news coverage of the WTC on 9/11/01.

They also used it on an episode of The West Wing that to end the show after a dude got gunned down.  That originally aired in 2002.

In Shrek, it's Rufus Wanwrights cover.  Though, I think they actually used JOhn Cale in the movie and Rufus on the soundtrack.

Also rewatching those montages out-of-context is really, really funny

Especially Season 2:

hahahaha oh god that season was so bad.  I love how long it takes him to fall, and the prolonged "Whhyyyyyyy?" look at Marissa.  hahaha oh man

the guy who wrote it is a great music writer named mike barthel and the post is here: http://www.clapclap.org/2007/04/hallelujah.html and i probably linked it. it was originally a paper he gave at the 2007 emp pop conference.

edit: also it features a "montage of montages" which is double-funny.

I actually think we should make a different general TV thread, and just keep this one about the ways in which Josh Schwartz does not respect our intelligence.

like the time Ryan became a cage fighter while that terrible goth-pop cover of "Running Up that Hill" played

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfouPOZUt8U

(that's fan clips but they did use the song in the show)

Around Halloween one of the jock thugs from upstairs came down to have a beer and he was wearing like super tight jeans and like a neckerchief and some other awful accessories that escape me at the moment and I was like "Are you going as hipster douchebag?" and he said that he was someone from the OC and I was like, "Oh that's hilarious, man!" and he seemed taken aback and was all "Why is that hilarious?" and I went "You're... not kidding?"

Turns out that the show is loved by all sorts of idiots, not just teenage girls!

ah yes, Seth Cohen.

In fact, I think you could make the case that Seth Cohen bears a lot of the responsibility for bringing hipster douchebagism to the mainstream

I had to Google Josh Schwartz. I'm a little bit proud of that, honestly.

In tv news, I'm re-watching BSG. It holds up pretty well. When does the new season start? (or is it postponed because of the strike?)

I cannot comment on The O.C., as I have never seen an episode. Therefore, allow me to talk about something else. I took a hiatus from Mad Men when I started watching Homicide, and now I have returned to it. It is very okay, soundly mediocre, but it keeps me awake in these boring days of mine.

Actually I vaguely knew who the guy was because I remembered reading a "write up" in USA Today on Gossip Girl and getting extremely pissed off. I looked up the OC on wp and there his name was. D is an intelligent girl and thus has never watched an episode to my knowledge.
