I thought I knew Frida Kahlo, but this one's new to me: The Broken Column.

A pillar as a pinned-together spine! Mind blown.

So I work at Piedmont College, this tiny little private school in the northeast Georgia foothills. Lately, I've been learning a bit more about the history of the place (and there's a lot of it -- the school was founded in 1897), and the other day, I learned about this woman named Jane Anderson, who was expelled in 1904. She left Georgia soon after, became a popular short story writer in New York and then a war correspondent for the London Daily mail. While in France reporting from the British trenches, she became -- of all things -- Joseph Conrad's lover, but within a few years she moved to Spain, married a nobleman, and became involved in the Spanish Civil War. She was captured, imprisoned, and tortured by the Republicans, and was eventually sentenced to death before being rescued by the US government. She came back home, but not for long, and wound up broadcasting Nazi propaganda from Berlin during WWII (they called her "The Georgia Peach"). After the war, she hid out for awhile but was arrested and charged with treason in 1947. Her case was complicated by a lack of evidence and the fact that she was now, technically, a Spanish citizen, so they let her go. She returned to her husband in Spain and lived out the rest of her apparently peaceful existence teaching English. She died in Madrid in 1972.

Pretty fascinating!

From what we have been told by both the landlords and the onsite caretaker he is almost totally gone except for some boxes, and his mom has to clean*. Caretaker said she expected he would be gone a week in advance. There is like a 95% chance that everything will run smoothly, but I am highly superstitious, and he is paid through the end of the month so the landlords could not say for absolute certain.

So this weekend some friends and I went to a movie theater to see a popular motion picture. The movie theater in question has a lobby which is designed with a great big dome type situation in the middle, and when you stand right in the middle of the dome, whatever you say no matter how quietly you say it echoes throughout the usually crowded lobby of the theater.

After viewing the aforementioned motion picture, myself and my dear friend Luke were walking back through the lobby toward the exit, and having friendly conversation, as one does with a friend. Luke was telling me about some recent unfortunate bowel movements he had been experiencing, and just as we unwittingly walked through the crux of the domed lobby, Luke uttered the words "incredible diarrhea" which naturally echoed convincingly throughout the lobby. We nonchalantly continue walking and chatting until we were at a safe distance from the "echo zone" when Luke, mid-whatever-sentence-he-was-saying-at-the-time said, "What timing that was." "Yeah, that was great, let's go play some video games and then go eat wings," came my response. And so it was.

Just got an email trying to sell me one of these: http://uk12miniguitar.com/Home.html

So random. It's not like I've received tons of emails trying to sell other championship stuff either, just these mini-guitars.

(context: watching an old X-Files episode)

I've decided my current view on necrophilia is that I think I'd be flattered if somebody saw my dead, ever so slightly decaying body and still thought I was pretty hot.

Also, this thread is A+ quality right now.

Sometime, let me tell you about when I moved in 2011 and at least 3 people called my Alderman's office about the ensuing disaster.

There's an amazing electrical storm here tonight, and I was in the bathroom (no windows) when this amazingly loud thunder happened, cracked like it hit literally right above my head, and the whole room shook—sounded like something happened to the roof, but then it was quiet. I've never felt anything like that from a storm, and I am wondering if it actually hit the building or something? Everything seems fine, but my ears are ringing a little.

Watching the lightning now, and it's fantastic.

Nothing like a good electrical storm at night. This spring we had a really intense one, and in the middle of the night I was jerked awake and into a sitting position by the loudest and most prolonged roll of thunder I'd ever heard. It was absurd. I mean, for several seconds I had no idea what the fuck was going on and not just because I'd just woken up. You wake up to this apocalyptic din that continues for several seconds and thunder does not at first occur to you because you've never heard thunder like that in your life. I noted the exact time and asked my parents and a student I had in class that lives in our neighborhood if they heard it, and they all said "Oh, yeah." I would love to have an idea of what kind of lightning bolt produced that. I'm guessing one of those that has 100 branches and stretches for miles.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is what listening to heavy metal is like.
