All in Dublin unless otherwise noted.

February:
The Klezmatics and Susan McKeown - The Cherry Tree (Walkinstown)
Simon Nabatov / Rolf Hind - National Concert Hall

March:
Si Schroeder w/ The Blood & Honey Sound System - Crawdaddy
Andrew Bird / Dosh - Crawdaddy

April:
Street musicians in Seoul
ATP: Highlights- Felix Lajko, Yann Tiersen, The Dirty Three (Minehead, UK)

May:
Felix Lajko - St. Anne's Church
Debashish Bhattacharya - Christchurch and Bray Town Hall

June:
Beirut - Tripod

August:
Kocani Orkestar - Farmleigh House
Fanfare Ciocarlia - Pavilions Theatre (Dun Laoghaire)

October:
Iron & Wine - Ambassador

November:
The Necks - SARC (Belfast)
Andrew Bird / Dosh - Tripod
Stars of the Lid / Ulrich Schnauss - Whelan's

December:
Boban Markovic Orkestar - The Button Factory

Particular highlights:
Debashish Bhattacharya
Andrew Bird
Fanfare Ciocarlia
Felix Lajko
Iron & Wine
The Necks

Disappointments:
- Missing The Ex because I got two punctures within 10 minutes of each other on my way to the show.
- Missing A Hawk And A Hacksaw because of some bullshit with the promoters that resulted in the headline show being pulled two weeks beforehand, and the replacement support slot being inexplicably pulled on the day of the show.

Wow, Dr. Bob, you have way better gypsies come through Dublin than make it to Toronto.

And Mahala Rai Banda in late 2006, let's not forget.

In fact, it was more a case of waiting a few years then four coming along at once- just like buses.  Happy times.

fuck dude your list is completely awesome, there's like ten bands on that list I'd go see & it generally takes an act of Congress to get me to go see a show

Yup, that list indeed isn't too shabby.

As for Kammerflimmer Kollektief, I'm a bit embittered about the fact that I didn't make it to their show in November a couple of weeks ago, but a) it was probably not a full-length set anyway (not sure if that's really such a bad thing, considering that a Staubgold label night sounds pretty good in its own right), b) it was right in the middle of a pretty impressive concert run, and c) one of my best friends just HAD to have his birthday fall on the same day. Ah, well, it was still a pretty good year.

Highlights:
The climax was definitely a week in April during which I saw two nights of the Donaufestival in Krems (highlights: Sunn O))), Bonnie Prince Billy, Baby Dee, Om, short but excellent sets by Six Organs of Admittance and Hush Arbors), then two consecutive nights of Elephant Micah, Vollmar and The Puddle Parade, and a night of the William Parker Quartet in Amsterdam, all within 7 or 8 days.
Outside of that period, my favourite concerts were Boris at the Szene Wien in June and John Tilbury/Stevie Wishart/Werner Dafeldecker/Christof Kurzmann playing as The Violet Quartet at the Porgy & Bess in Vienna.

Screw the list format, I guess.

hah, coldforge, i can't deny that i would have been pretty interested to see that happen, if not happy about it. so yeah, i'll bet it was an intense show to see. whether that would make it the BEST gig of the year is a question i can't really answer.

alex, here's a stupid but somewhat informative thread about it on another board:

I went to 20 shows this year, which is about perfect, I'd say.

Ones that stick out are (in chronological order):

Mastodon/Converge @ 1st ave
Zebulon Pike/Kylesa/The Hidden Hand @ the Turf Club
Pink Reason (4 times with 4 different lineups--the first one with the full band was probably the best)
Isis/Jesu @ the Triple Rock
The Paper Chase/Explosions in the Sky @ 1st ave
Low @ Red Stag Block Party
Melvins/Helmet/Zebulon Pike @ Grumpy's Block Party
Ryan Adams @ the State Theater
Bat For Lashes @ the Varsity Theater
Joanna Newsom + Orchestra @ Pabst Theater (MKE)

I found Bubbachups's list quite mouth-watering as well, although some others really aren't too shabby either. My attempt at a top ten, although pretty much only n1 is definite and I couldn't manage an order after that:

(I never know whether to separate opening bands from main acts when making these kinds of lists, and I tend to think it would make more sense, but since nearly everyone decided not to, I followed suit)

1. PJ Harvey (11-16, Le Grand Rex, Paris)

Excellent:
Thee, Stranded Horse (5-17, Stimultania, Strasbourg)
31 Knots (5-17, La Laiterie Club, Strasbourg)
Andrew Bird + Beirut + Loney, Dear (11-13, La Laiterie, Strasbourg)
Electrelane + Tender Forever + Anni Rossi (11-19, La Laiterie Club, Strasbourg)

Very good:
Hubbub (2-8, Auditorium MAMCS, Strasbourg)
Schnee + Los Glissandinos (4-10, Auditorium MAMCS, Strasbourg)
Tom Z (9-9, Caixa Cultural, Rio de Janeiro)
Laura Gibson (11-20, Stimultania, Strasbourg)
Jesu + Fear Falls Burning (12-14, La Laiterie Club, Strasbourg)

Guitar Wolf and SleaterKinney were last year. That Renderers show was super fun.

WORST - Morrissey @ Chastain Park.  Terrible venue.  I'm sure you can easily find a review online that describes why this show sucked.

BEST - Morrissey in an actual club where I saw him packed in with hundreds of other people.  This is the way it should be.
