I'm so excited for this album I don't think I can even put it into words.

I have never been let down by this band. ever. (except when they played a 21 and over venue.)

and if sleep and wake up songs is any indicator, than this album should be amazing.

sorry...I guess I didn't leave much room for discussion.

I'm going to go see them at the end of this month.  I'm not really sure why.  I like them well enough, but at the same time, they're kind of like buying that peanut butter with the jelly already inside: it's like you're getting a Bright Eyes album AND a Neutral Milk Hotel album for the price of one!

Having said that, I still like them.  I'm conflicted.

haha, I can see that. but I'm still rather jealous. they are playing shows with the decemberists, but unless I am somehow kidnapped, I don't think I'll get to see any of them.

I hope you enjoy the show !

I thought I remembered seeing an Iowa City show among the dates?

Dangit, nothing within 4 hours of me.  I don't think they like Nebraska anymore since a whopping 12 people showed up for them, Shearwater, and the Minus Story.

http://decemberists.com/dates.html

i definitely see an iowa city date there!

for what it's worth, i think that okkervil river do raucus catharsis way better than conor and his gang.

anyway, i have it from a certain multi-instrumentalist that the okkervils will be doing another tour later on this year. they will hopefully hit up more midwest and east coast dates!

uuuuuuuuggghhhhhhhh

Bright Eyes and Neutral Milk Hotel should never go hand in hand. Unless you're saying that you don't like peanut butter, and Bright Eyes is not the jelly.

They more or less sound like NMH with Oberst singing, to me, but not as good as either.  And a lot of Bright Eyes' material sounds fairly Mangum-ish, I think.

Anyway, there's a show in Madison, and I'd go to see Okkervil River, but god, I don't know if I can stand seeing the Decemberists like, ever again ...

Eh, they're just worn out for me.  It's like, I get it, you have a fetish for prostitutes and chimney sweeps.  Get over it.

Or perhaps I'm not being fair.

I don't hate them.  I just got kinda sick of them, and I think there's much better stuff out there.

And the NMH comparisons still piss me the fuck off.

i think its absolutrey incredible that they're playing w/ the decemberists. i just wish it were or headlining cause i've never seen them play and i'm obsessed w/ them.. if the new record is half as good as "for real" its going to be the best thing they've done.

I don't see either the Bright Eyes or NMH comparison.  Like at all.  Admitedly I think I've only heard maybe half a dozen Bright Eyes songs, and the only Okkervil River album I like (listen to with any kind of frequency) is Don't Fall In Love With Everyone You See, which is a great album title.  I don't remember being too impacted or impressed by their newer record or EP.

But I wouldn't mind seeing them.  I see there are no east coast dates.  Boo.

the main comparison would be vocals/lyrics, i think.  i remember the first few times listening to "down the river of golden dreams", i would have bet money that conor oberst was guest singing on "the war criminal rises and speaks"

It was Lalitree, I think, who said Okkervil River was Bright Eyes done right (you know, like with talent and smarts and stuff) and I think that was pretty OTM.  I like Okkervil River lots.

I was all about to go "NUH-UH WTF!" but then I remembered that maybe I did say that (I think it was actually about Shearwater, but it's close). You're right that I meant it in a good way, like they do all the intensity and stuff with talent and good voices and no pretentiousness.

I was really confused until I realized he was talking about the Decemberists, not Okkervil River. But yeah, ace anaylsis, for real.

Jeb wins.

BTW, an Okkervill river song was the first song played on my new iPod Shuffle today (through the magic of shuffle play), and I must say it was a lovely experience.

I like the Decemberists, but I thought what jeb said was really funny and spot-on.

I also like Okkervil River--and Shearwater--so I'm really excited by all this.

I have no opinion about Bright Eyes, so I'm really nonplussed about how every thread in In The Earbuds is degenerating into an Oberst thread.

So what if the decemberists have written two songs? I'm still fond of them.
