So, basically what I do is coordinate lectures being given by really prominent scientists.  Like leaders-in-their-field rockstars-of-biology kind of people.  I ask them, "Please come speak here," and they say "I suppose I will deign to grace you with my presence," or they say "Maggot, why talkest thou to I? NO I have no TIME for your SHENANIGANS I am doing SCIENCE."  Or, if they're junior faculty, they say, "Yes, SIR!  Do you where I can find me some tenure, Sir?"

Anyway, today I got a call from someone I'd never talked to before.  He was wondering if he could give a lecture, and wanted to run his research by me.  For the next ten minutes, I listened to his spiel, which incorporated several theories.  Among them:

- Noah's curse upon his son Ham signified the insertion of a new gene into Ham's genome.
- This gene predisposes Ham, and all his modern-day descendents, to violence.
- The iron core of the earth is where the demons are bound.  But that doesn't stop them from influencing us!

Anyway, the guy told me he was calling from the lobby of our building, and asked to speak to me in person, but I told I'm real busy this afternoon, so I couldn't do so.  I gave him our fax number, and he's going to fax me his findings instead.

I don't do any Science, myself!  I told the guy I'd take a look at his findings, but I did not say anything about how qualified I was to evaluate them in a scientific light.  Shockingly, the issue of my credentials and my area of expertise didn't occur to the guy as a question he might have wanted to ask.

The closest he came to asking me anything about my background, in fact, was when he finished a sentence with "You remember that, from Genesis?"  To which I responded, "Uh huh."

So, uh, dudes?  Remember that job that I got?  Well, that motherfucker called and notified me that he "needed to go in a different direction" on Tuesday morning prior to my coming into the office!

I'm fairly certain that this is a gender issue that's in flagrant violation of EEOC regulations, and further, I feel it's just a wrongful termination all around.  I sent him an email last night notifying him that I'd need a detailed explanation as to why I was terminated.  I didn't threaten him legally or anything, but I did do some extremely clever things with the wording/structuring of the email that would be enough to freak anyone out...we'll see where this goes.

I mean, I bought a goddamn laptop for the job while I was unemployed...if that's not a case of detrimental reliance (Hey, Freddy Knuckles!), then I don't know what is!  I'm really only interested in getting the cost of the laptop out of him.  If I have to take his ass to small claims court, then so be it. 

He made disparaging remarks about women in my presence, and him, as well as the broker made a huge deal about me being male and getting hired.  Um, last I checked, that was illegal!  This dipshit shouldn't have thrown my resume to the side so quickly.  What a dipshit!

So I think more than just saying 'I bought a laptop because he told me I had the job', you might need something a little more.  Something along the lines of 'you've got the job, you'll need a laptop'. 

Or I spose you could prove that the guy offering you the job could reasonably expect you to buy a laptop based on that promise.  I dunno.

I still haven't heard back from this douche yet.  If I don't hear back from him by this weekend, I'm probably going to file a small claims suit against him early next week.

Y'know, I'm kinda just interested in letting this prick know that you can't just dick people over like that.  Supposedly there was a rather well endowed, bitchy woman in the office today saying that she was there to act as his assistant.  I guess it probably is true that not having a female anatomy cost me the job.

My boss, who has been an insufferable prick since he screwed a hostess, ruined his marriage, and feel into an alcoholic stupor, got drunk last night at the bar and kept following me around. Asking me why I hated him and saying how he didn't understand what went wrong between us. The stories of this guys' fuck-ups are long and varied, but suffice it to say that he's a big bag o' dicks.

we're moving offices. this sucks less than being groped or fired, in that it's probably just a downgrading from awesome location to substandard location and nothing else will change, but it's still pretty lame. i think a lot of the reason i'm so cheery at work is the big windows letting in sunshine and evidence of the outside world, and i don't think those exist in any of the ones we're considering.
