yeah that's pretty ridiculous.  my most recent experience with our health care system was going into the walk in clinic yesterday because of a nagging cough, seeing the doctor pretty quickly, getting prescribed some wicked cough syrup (that according to google is an opiate of some sort, so it knocks me right out), gettin the prescription filled and handed to me for a total of $0.

I've been having dreams about work.

Apparently, last night Frank got home late--after 3:50 a.m., which is when his alarm clock is set for when he works.  I had shut off the alarm, and thus was slightly awake when he got home at about 4:10.  Meanwhile, I was apparently dreaming about having a bunch of orthopedic patients.

Frank claims I was sleep talking semi-lucidly, not at all able to distinguish reality and dream, nor home and work.  "You missed the loudest ortho alarm.  I turned it off.  It was loud, then they all came"  "It's all these trauma patients, I need your help."  "No this is real!!  Stop laughing.  Help me turn this kiddo."

I'm glad to have a few days off.

Heh, when Campbell and I were still together, and I was working nights he'd just started a call centre job. I came in at 5am one morning, and whispered hey hon! I'm home! He sat bolt upright and said "Hello Campbell Walker speaking. How can I help you?"

I'm trying to work out how to set a union on my rather corrupt supermarket, but am having trouble finding legislation on the net about wages and conditions.
Help me out. Here are the things which need addressing (I can't do much about all of them as they're not necessarily illegal, but they're off just the same):

~A lot of people at work, including me, feel they're not being paid properly. We only get payslips once a month I think, or very irregularly anyway (once I got about 2,3 at a time), and each time I seem to get a different amount; little the first and second weeks and then a windfall on the third, though i don't seem to get much windfall now. So it's very hard to work out how much I'm being taxed etc.

~There's a rule there saying that among staff English is the only language to be spoken on the premises. I got told by one of the other workers (one against them as well) that's actually NZ law but I'm unsure. If anyone knows about that let me know.

~If you work 4 hours you get a 10 minute break (timed from when you leave checkout, staffroom is at the opposite end of the supermarket). They say this is "very generous" of them. If you work 5+ you get a 10 minute and an unpaid 30 minute one. It gets to something like 9 hrs before you can get two 10 minutes and a half hour.

~If you work there fulltime for a year you get four weeks unpaid leave.

~There are security cameras everywhere, as in all supermarkets, but what I've been told (this may not be true) is that the deputy boss can watch these cameras from her home. Actually that one probably isn't true, but that's what I heard.

~They take a bloody cynical view of employees. There was a notice in the staffroom awhile ago, which has now been taken down, which said: "Please note: This workplace requires no physical exercise programme. Staff get enough exercise jumping to conclusions, flying off the handle, running down the boss, knifing their friends in the back, dodging their responsibility and pushing their luck." HA HA HA. OH THE WIT.

~The bosses, Mr and Mrs Bennett, a)don't resemble the Pride and Prejudice couple (pah) but more importantly put forward a nice personalised image for the public, who get to call them Maurice and Carolyn, but staff are meant to call them Mr and Mrs Bennett.

~They made me wear a skivvy! This should be illegal, my vanity was severely bruised


I know I have to leave this job before my head explodes but it'd be immensely satisfying if I could fuck them up before I did.

I presume you're only there as "casual" or temporary? Did you sign a contract? Have a look at it with your Mum, or ask for a copy of the collective one?

Regardless of circumstance, you should be getting your holiday pay, unless they've included it in the pay you're already getting.

Anne, when you work for a year, you get four weeks paid leave, by law. If you work less than full time, you get the proportionate amount pro rata. Your contract status is determined by the amount of hours you work: if you work more than 32 a week, you are full-time, with all the rights that entails. They can't force you to only speak English on the premises, though a lot of employers try to tell you so. Also, speak with Unite if you're serious about this - it's not the type of thing you can do by yourself, especially not if you're not a fulltime worker.

I told my boss I'm having to give quitting serious consideration, because of previously mentioned oppitunities. Her reaction was to offer me a promotion, one which I'm utterly unqualified for, but comes with a decent pay bump, as well as the promise that she will continue to allow me to fit my schedule around uni. I said I'd have to think about it, because if I turned it down and quit, when I have to go back to care work in september I'm going to have a tough time to find people who are as accomodating and will pay me anything other than the bare minimum.

My current employer -- the rich fellow with too many movie posters -- is the most technologically-inept person I've ever met. This is not hyperbole: he asked me how to restart his computer today; he can't use a digital camera; he doesn't know what iTunes is. Whatever, he's paying me, so I help him reboot and snap photographs and listen to music.

Yesterday, I guess, he lost his cell phone. Today he decides the best plan is for him to buy an iPhone. Which means canceling his Verizon service, setting up AT&T service -- and, you know, turning the damn thing on. At one point he asks me what the charger is for.

Hey:

1) Don't buy an iPhone if you don't know how to restart your computer.
2) Why are you allowed to have so much money?
3) You've left me alone in your house for the afternoon and I know where the $20,000 Snow White poster is.
