I believe the Kids in the Hall are doing all new material this time around, which is ultra-cool.

I humbly suggest you listen to "New England" by The Modern Lovers.  A YSI could be provided, if necessary.

That's mighty kind, Roy, but I've heard my share of the Modern Lovers in my time.  I'll probably just listen to some Dropkick Murphys if I get in the mood for some Massy goodness, or Big Pig for the spirit of New Hampshire.

Praise of my high-falootin' literary work makes me happy.

Next I shall commence work on a modest rap as a reaction to all them young arrogant rappers who have no qualms about vanity.

It is 5 am and I just completed the population and community ecology section of my species review on the carnivorous Horned Bladderwort!  Only one more section to go and I might be published?  I don't think so but a gal can dream.

I'm pretty sure I have the best PhD supervisor ever. Evidence: A little while ago, we were talking about a certain book that would be relevant for my research, but that I haven't succeeded in tracking down through inter-library loan and was reluctant to buy because it's out of print and tends to be sold second-hand for a bit more than I am willing to shell out for just one book (even if it does come with a CD of audio examples). She told me that, if I don't succeed in tracking it down, she'd buy it*, I should just let her know where she could order it from. That was a couple of weeks ago - in the meantime, I had actually tracked down a photocopy of the most relevant part of the book (a very lengthy introductory chapter) and decided to just have a look at the rest whenever I come across it somewhere, and thus not to bother her with my plight. Only, guess what I just found in my post box, with a note in her handwriting saying "Here you are!"?

* no, we do not have a budget for buying books through the dept., so yes, I do believe that means "I, personally, will buy it with my own money"

Wow, that's pretty awesome. In keeping with the spirit of this thread, and though I don't have any specific stories to tell, I'll go ahead and say that I really liked my first of week of work. Hmm, it's not over yet, though, I suppose I'd better get back to it.

Yay! for completed essays, good first weeks, and awesome bosses.

I'm happy because I got back in the cycling groove today, farewell bus pass, me and my two wheels have got it covered from here until winter.

i'm pretty amazed to be posting in this thread to do something other than reply to someone else's post, but i am actually pretty damn happy right now. get this: the girl who was my best friend in 9th and 10th grade, who told me about the university radio station in charlottesville that introduced me to a lot of the music i love to this day, who i haven't talked to since i was 16 or so, found me on myspace last night. she sent me this really tentative message that was all "i don't know if you'll remember me..." i had just been thinking about her in the past week or so, wondering what ever happened to her, so of course i was like "HELL YES i remember you!" we messaged back and forth a couple times, i gave her my cellphone number, she called me this afternoon, and we talked for something like 3 hours. where our ability to get along and have stuff to talk about is concerned, it's pretty much like no time has passed. she still lives in charlottesville, which is only an hour away from richmond, and we even talked about hanging out again sometime soon. this is super cool.

and i hesitate to even share this part, because it's kind of insane, but we talked about how both of us had liked each other back when we were in high school but never ended up dating, and she mentioned that she had wondered when she found me on myspace and saw that we still have a lot in common why she had never dated me, and said that i looked really good in my pictures, etc... i think there may be something more behind her contacting me than just an interest in rekindling the friendship. and honestly, i'd be totally down with that. but i mean, even if not, it's really good catching back up with her. so yeah, I AM HAPPY! who knew!

i kinda do too. i have to admit, the only reason nothing happened back then is because i was too scared to tell her that i was into her for the first six months we were friends, because she was so pretty, i was sure that she would have no interest in someone like me. by the time i confessed my attraction, she was seeing someone else, but she admitted that she'd been pretty into me when we first started hanging out, and just assumed that i wasn't into her. and then nothing ever happened after that because she was always seeing someone, and eventually she started dating a guy who made her quit hanging out with all her friends, so we lost touch. turns out she went on to marry that guy, and they divorced three years ago.

all of this was discussed during our phone conversation, to the tune of much nervous laughter by both of us. so yeah, i think something might be going on here. but as i said, even if not, i'm cool with it. it's good to catch back up with old friends.

hey thats cool andrew!
Though it may also just mean you end up being friends with someone again too.
But whatever, thats real good reason to be delighted...

I finally got my benefit connected back up - long story - but it means a little money.
Bought lots of cheap veggies and stuff yesterday, plus a bottle of whisky. Ordered a couple records.
Made fantastic burritos last night with bacon, tofu, capsicum, mushroom, red onion and chilli. All cooked seperately on sandwich press - the cooking arrangements in my little kitchen are odd.
