It's kind of like if you take a really basic chili, but take out pretty much all the liquid, so it's real thick. You have ground beef, some vegetables and tomato paste and some basic seasonings. Then you put a few heaping spoonfuls on a bun and then you stuff.

Today I went to Godfather's Pizza with two buds and a guy I used to be pretty good friends with but have since sort of lost touch with was working and hooked us up with two large pizzas and an order of cheese bread for ten bucks.
And to think I had almost forgotten how much I liked the kid.
Also, last night I became drunk, and then blazed, and then I ate leftover sloppy joes and tortilla chips. Guess what the best part of my night was...

Ah there are so many ways to make 'em though. The other day I browned some ground beef, added a couple small cans of tomato sauce, some diced green peppers and tomatoes, and a wide variety of spices. Those were pretty good. Later, we made some using roommate's mom's recipe, which is ground beef, 2/3 bottle of ketchup, a bunch of mustard, a couple tablespoons of brown sugar, and a small amount of diced onions. They were completely different tasting from my earlier batch, but also very delicious.

i think i'm more into your recipe than your roommate's mom's, augo. that whole ketchup/mustard thing doesn't sound nearly as good.
and wally, yes, sloppy joes are gonna give you gas. but it's worth it.

Can I take it that you could basically just replace the mince in either of Augo's reciepes with TVP, Beanfeast, or some other meat sub? For an average no-Veganomicon but vegan one of these sloppy joes?

the manwich sloppy joe mix is vegan I'm pretty sure so my old vegan roommate just added green peppers and morning star veggie crumbles. sooo yummy. I haven't had them in so long because I've been trying not to do the meat substitute thing anymore.

I thought they'd be something exotic and exciting that I will be salivating to try if I ever make it to estades unidos, like.... grits. or twinkies. stuff that is unheard of here.
Holy shit, you GOTTA try Twinkies.
When Europe-Grace was visiting New York, I was particularly proud of the trashy-trifle I made; it's basically Oreos, pudding, whipped cream, and bits of toffee, in a series of layers. She took a bite, and said, "It tastes like America."
In other food news, I got back from New Hampshire yesterday, bringing with me four pounds of cheddar cheese.

If Europe-Alex ever visits New York and won't be served trashy-trifle, she'll be gutted.
I've also never had Twinkies, grits or sloppy joes either, NZ-Grace, so you are definitely not alone in your ignorance. (I think I'd rather starve than try sloppy joes, though.)

All right, alex, that's four things that are going on the agenda for any future visits to New York. I'll keep compiling a list as we learn more. Ever had a lobster roll? Clam chowder? Poutine?

I think we'd be better off limiting the list to sweet stuff, because I am horribly picky where the rest is concerned. To wit: I would not eat sloppy joes because I do not trust minced eat nor do I eat tomato-based products; I don't do seafood; and just the thought of ruining perfectly good fries with cheese curds is extremely disturbing to me.

I wonder if those remarks have resulted in us being featured on a list of personae non gratae in New York now...

Canada, maybe. It's not very common here at all.
But: tomato-based products? What the fuck is wrong with you?

Yeah, you're more likely to be persona non grata in Canada, I'd say. Plus, I'll go to NYC WHENEVER I WANT
okay, when I have a lot of money, too

Yeah, I know. I should work on that one, really, so perhaps by the time I do make it to NY, I'll have that problem solved.
Has anyone here ever found tomatoes disgusting and doesn't anymore now, incidentally? If so, what strategy would you recommend to ease yourself into eating tomatoes? It's the big fleshy saucy tomatoes that put me off the most (that, and tomato sauces), so I guess I should just start by trying some cherry tomatoes and working my way up from there.
I have no motivation to work on my animosity towards cheese, seafood or minced meat, mind you.
And Gary: Nah, people in this part of the world think I'm insane, too.

Actually, most people I know who hate tomatoes have no problem with ketchup and tomato sauce, so I kinda respect your across-the-board hatred for all things tomato. That said, I wasn't too fond of tomatoes either as a lad, and I'm not sure how I got into them but I definitely found cherry tomatoes less revolting than the big ones. You'll find a very thin slice of tomato on a sandwich can be pretty good, too.

the snobby joes use lentils but when I usually make sloppy joes, I just use TVP, yeah.
