Awesome, man.  Thanks for the suggestion.  I would definitely like to hit Italy.

Grace says you have to come to Italy.

Yeah, if you get to Bologna, you can stay at mine, no worries. We have a camper bed. If you feel the urge to do the Florence/Venice/Rome city thing, then Bologna is a good base cos it's geographically in the middle of them all and, in terms of vibe/architecture/food/everything, it kicks the ass of all those cities.

If you're just in it for the rural camping stuff, though, you might find that your dollar goes further in some of the more eastern countries. And it will definitely go further in the south of Italy than in the north.

Also, I would recommend that you sign up to the couchsurfers website - I've never used it myself but friends have used it to travel across the US without paying for accommodation so I'm sure you can do the same in Europe.

There's some kind of filming going on a couple blocks east of my office, tons of trailers and all kinds of craziness.  That shit always makes me curious.  According to this site there are 4 different movies filming in town currently.  Humboldt Park, Public Enemies, Baby On Board, and some "untitled" project, but that company has a bunch of stuff in production right now.  We're nowhere near Humboldt Park here and since Public Enemies is a period piece it's unlikely they'd be doing outdoor shooting over there.  Curious curious curious

Corner of Franklin & Erie in River North? If so, Gary Oldman is doing a horror flick or something.

Hey thanks Grace!  I just might take you up on that...I'd like to visit southern Italy, so I would have to be going through N. Italy at some point.  Thanks for the info.  I'll keep you posted on my plans.

Also, I'm a member of globalfreeloaders.com... I don't know if that site is more prominent that the couchsurfers site, but I'm assuming it's the same type of operation.  What a genious idea, too!

HBO's in town filming stuff for the American version of "Little Britain," which I know nothing about but 1) is apparently some UK sketch comedy and 2) they leave a much smaller footprint than the "One Tree Hill" crew, which has no qualms about shutting down two or three blocks in the middle of the afternoon and denying access to my own house in the name of terminal lameness.

Also, Wally, I may take you up on that offer as well.  I do enjoy beer.  How far north of London are you?

I'd really like to see some off-the-beaten-path places in central and northish England, so I'm kind of looking around at that area.

Based on the description provided by IMDb I think Humboldt Park was definitely filming around the corner from me. They converted an out-of-business Ukrainian grocery store into a bodega and then changed the sign again to make it the same bodega a few generations later. And they added a Puerto Rican flag. Man, I could've said hi to Luis Guzman! He definitely wouldn't've recognized me! But!

god bless retarded trend pieces

Quote
It was just a few years ago that everyone was nattering about the metrosexual, the New York man who, though straight, loved his Kiehl’s and Thomas Pink tattersall shirts and is addicted to Grey’s Anatomy. Less discussed has been his female counterpart: gals who, while not lesbians, dress like guys (young guys), well into their 30’s; who leap into games of pickup basketball with male friends while the rest of us watch wanly from the sidelines; who affect a wry detachment from their sex’s conventional concerns of shoe-shopping, man-hunting and family.

I can't wait until I live in NYC so these navel-gazing culture pieces that speak of New York as some other discrete planet will no longer...

Well it turns out I can't really finish that sentence

While we're on the subject of separated at birth, I finally found an online version (at 3quarksdaily.com) of a picture of VS Naipaul that I'd been looking for since it was published on the cover of the Guardian Review a few months ago.  This now allows me to say:

VS Naipaul and Sir Richard Bishop- separated at birth?

I got this from MeFi, so I'm sure people have already seen it, but still:

Quote
He may be pulling in $12 million a picture and deified by women worldwide, but George Clooney is apparently not above digging around in cat shit for the sake of a good joke.

Actor Richard Kind (who plays Paul on "Spin City" and is a member of Clooney's inner circle) and his pet feline learned that lesson the hard way.

"Richard had this cat that he loved and adored," Ben Weiss, a "Friends" assistant director and another Clooney crony, recalls in the upcoming issue of Men's Journal. "So George would go in the bathroom, and that's where the litter box was. And there would be cat shit in there, so George would clean it up and flush it down the toilet. Then Richard would go in there and say, 'God, it's so weird. My cat hasn't taken a shit in forever.'"

This went on for days: the cat crapping, Clooney merrily scooping and flushing. And eventually, Kind grew understandably concerned.

"Richard went to the vet to get some kind of thing to make the cat go to the bathroom," says Weiss. "The poor cat. The cat's shitting, and George is still cleaning it up."

Clearly, the madness had to end. So the erstwhile "ER" star capped it off with a bang (or, more accurately, a thud).

"Finally, George stood over the cat box and took a giant shit," Weiss tells the magazine. "And finally Richard goes in there and says, 'Oh, my God! Kitty!'"

I had a grudging respect for Clooney but now I heart him unreservedly.
