Word. Y'all's elections are way too long. I used to like your regularly scheduled elections, because it meant I could remember who was president back to Eisenhower or Truman or whatever, whereas with Canadian prime ministers I'd get muddled pretty quick, because our leaders turn over on an unreliable timetable. But now I'm thinkin', snap elections are the way to go. Keeps things quick, people can actually take a break between campaigns to do some legislating, and it kinda bypasses the whole campaign finance mess, since there's a practical ceiling on how much you can reasonably spend on a campaign when you only have a couple months to do it in. When you know when things are coming too far in advance, you're only going to end up planning ahead. But if you don't know when things are coming, you're more likely to try not to blow your wad to soon.

Or maybe not, what do I know?

reiteration: the only way i see obama coming out on top tonight is if he wins OH, TX and VT. anything less is going to be spun hillary's way. which sucks, considering the huge deficits he's closed in OH & TX.

I dunno, the general feeling amongst the newsy people seems to be that Hillary has slipped so far back that she needs to dominate all those states just to stay in it. They definitely aren't going to call it for Obama unless he achieves some huge upsets, but even a spin Hillary's way won't amount to anymore than the ground she's lost since (the first) Super Tuesday.

Yeah, PA will decide it, unless either A) Obama somehow pulls off surprisingly huge wins tonight, or B) Clinton decides "fuck everything" and stays in it even after PA and goes for superdelegate campaigning craziness/brokered convention.

...and looks like A) ain't happening since the exit polls show a deadlock in TX and OH.

i don't know, blucas, i think if she loses one or both of oh and tx we may see her withdraw in the next few days. but if she doesn't by, say, friday, she's going for pa for sure.

yeah, I was just reading that quote from the OH DNC chair... there might be enough pressure from party to get her to withdraw.  Still don't think she will, though.  If she gets even like, a 2 point victory in both she's going to keep on, though.  Her campaign would frame it as a "comeback" after losing 11 straight, which is pretty preposterous, but hey, that's politics.

And might I point out that a deadlock in OH IS a major win for Obama, considering she was supposed to take it handily only a few weeks ago.

exactly.

for what it's worth, the media slant is finally tilting back towards obama this evening...too late to make a difference in the voting, of course, but still. clinton's slim chances despite a potentially good night is getting a lot of talking-head-time.

(i've been watching msnbc all day, so i'm not sure what's brewing on the other channels.)

God Slate is so fucking shitty.  It gets worse by the day.  I would be offended by this piece were it not the dumbest thing ever written.  This is some sub-WND shit here; at least that has comedic value.

Page 21 of that last thread?  Total stunner.  Way to pull out a climax, guys.

Tonight: Clinton's taking Ohio, Obama's taking Texas by a hair, and either way I'm taking some serious Tanq shots

I like how the after the blowout of Election Thread I, Election Thread II mostly just seethed with repressed rage and strained cordiality until the end when everyone went fucking crazy.  I was half expecting pollo to hit Dave with a whiskey bottle.  Not that I'd blame 'im.

Oh and richard, re: NAFTA, basically a bunch of U of C doodz are economic advisers on Obama's campaign; they sent a delegation to meet with the Canadian PM and told him "not to worry" whatever Obama says about NAFTA.  So, yeah, that's the hubbub.

I knoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow.

Or think about 2000, when George W. Bush suggested a candidate who could easily live with defeat, as opposed to Al Gore, who seemed wound far tighter. In the most memorable debate moment that year, Al Gore stood up and began walking behind Bush as Bush was answering a question, almost as if Gore were stalking his opponent (the better to dramatize the height difference, one Gore aide told me later). Bush looked over his shoulder, offered a slight "Oh, hi there!" nod, and the debate was effectively over. It was a classic Bugs vanquishing.

hey dude gore won the popular vote

The Bugs-Daffy dichotomy gets intriguing when you try to apply it to the general election.

Actually, no.  It doesn't.

A Cobra Commander/Snake Eyes dichotomy might've been intriguing (though twice as offensive)

The phrase "Bugs-Daffy dichotomy" is what really did it for me.
