I'm downloading The Hottest State, Ethan Hawke's film based on his own book.

Once again, I confuse Tim Roth with Tim Curry. At least I've straightened out who Tim Buckley is.

I, for one, am glad neither Tim Curry nor Tim Buckley's corpse are going to be in the new Hulk movie. How the hell are they making a new Hulk movie after the last one bombed so hard?

This is a terrible title for me to access in the workplace.
From what I've heard, the new Hulk movie bascially pretends the last one kinda didn't really exist, and aims at being a lot more rollicking, a lot less contemplative.

The Hulk grossed 128M domestically and was shot for 75M. It grossed 250M worldwide. It was poorly reviewed, but not terrible.
Also, they need a Hulk movie to make an Avengers movie.

Well, that sounds like a good idea for this movie. And a good justification to make it. Thank you for the Instant Results!
I started to watch We Own The Night, but I don't think it's gonna be my sort of movie. I really want to watch this Thai (I think) movie called Last Life in the Universe. But it's been a long time since I've managed to sit through a subtitled asian movie, man. The last ones I've seen have had this really odd soporific effect on me. Neither of them was A Tale of Two Sisters, though.

I understand the Iron Man movie is going to be a pretty strong lead-in to a potential Avengers movie.
I have no idea about this new Hulk movie but I kind of think Ed Norton looked at the old one, said to himself "That
sucked
, I could totally make a better one" and then did it. 'course I'm not all Mr. Statistics here, but regardless of how much money it made, if they're retconning the first movie out of existence like 2 years after it came out I don't think they hold it in very high regard.

I thought the first 45 seconds of the iron man teaser trailer were interesting, then the next minute of it looked terrible, then the last 10 seconds looked awesome.
But. yeah, if either or both of those movies does anything, an Avengers movie is a pretty done deal.

Have you seen the new trailer, Briggins? It's made me even more excited. I think the only part of the trailer that's making me wary is the love-interest. The rest looks great! Stark's a jackass! Stark gets captured! Stark makes armor! Stark feels conscience! Then flying and blasts of light and stuff! AWESOME

Milly's Netflix note about Last Life in the Universe:
Quote
Last Life in the Universe
this is one of the better movies i've ever seen in my life, btw, it's one of those 'greater than the sum of its parts' that'll leave you thinking about it at odd moments
I really enjoyed it. It does have this quiet, haunting quality to it.

You know what's really fascinating about Southland Tales? Richard Kelly's vision is bigger than he is. I mean, I don't think this guy is half as smart as he supposes, and the literary references and cultural allusions kind of fall flat, but he's got
something
that's indescribable, something that makes this film almost grotesquely entertaining. What milly said about a film adaptation of Gravity's Rainbow... I'm inclined to agree! This is like Infinite Jest brought to the screen, or something. Dude could redefine our idea of entertainment given the right story, I think. I know that sounds like empty hyperbole, but this film really has to be seen to believed. It's something else.

i thought the 1st hulk movie was pretty good, as far as superhero movies go. not the best--i reserve that spot for
hellboy
, among others--but in the 2nd or 3rd tier for sure.

the new hulk movie is retelling his origin again. get the fuck over origin stories hollywood, have a 5 minute intro sequence that gives the basics and just go to town with an interesting story already.

hell yeah! you make an excellent point about richard kelly + the right material...the sky's the limit. i just hope the commercial failure of southland tales doesn't get him sent to the punishment box, by the studio system.
when the rock is walking down the beach and he is drinking beer by holding the six pack up by the plastic strap (the cans still connected - but one of them open and the beer slopping down his face)...it wasn't a big set piece, but there is something about the image that won't leave my head. dude is just walking, tipping one can of a six pack in his mouth, with all the other 5 still connected!
the weirdness of that scene made me want to drop everything and enroll in film school. fucking insane!

man, like davy, i gotta give love to the ang lee hulk movie. it was one of the best comic book adaptations yet. it successfully did what bryan singer tried to do with that superman movie but failed. drama, etc. plus it had beautiful set pieces that really brought the comic book parts to life. i think it gets an undeserved 'bad rap'. call me crazy, but i thought it was a better movie than the last batman adaption (i have high hopes for the next one of course with heath ledger as the joker).
'course, i thought constantine was bad ass, and most people disliked constantine.

Dude I couldn't agree more. There are performances, and then there are performances which do not feel like performances but more like someone just emanating pure animal charisma toward you. That's how I felt about Timberlake's part, too--it was a function of their acting so much, because it's obvious that those two are barely serviceable in your standard Hollywood fare, but the effect of the film is such that it just projects. It takes up space. It's like a big fuck you to you as a modern America person. And that makes it sound too shrewd; it's not really, it's blunt and kind of dumb and you can't hardly fucking stop it. I'm pretty much an evangelist about at this point; I've been pushing burned copies on my friends just so they'll watch it. Wonderfully weird, and it far exceeds anything I thought I'd ever see out of that guy after
Donnie Darko
, which really seemed like it wasn't any better than all of the 'dark & brainy' shit it spawned.
Except possibly
Primer
which holy hell I want to see the next thing that guy makes. You know that movie cost $7000 to make?

Constantine had Tilda Swinton and for that reason is better than the Hulk which had nothing but those panel/gutter effects.

Agreed, it looks promising. Consider me mildly hyped.
At one point in the trailer this awesome Tom Morello riff comes on and I'm all like "Fuck yeah! Rage!", but then someone starts singing some awful stuff over this and I'm all like "oh crap! bad remix!", but then I remember that Audioslave exist. Oh well.
Last night watched
The Enigma of Kasper Hauser
and (inspired by something Andrew posted sometime)
Walking and Talking
. Both enjoyable.

talking about it makes me want to watch it again. but first i wanna track down some pdf's of the graphic novels, and read through them. i totally concur with all you're saying. and whenever you start to decide what the movie is, it punches you in the face. it's just so ... pure. pure what... i don't know. like you said, it has the potential to usher in a new kind of movie, sort of advancing the form. i didn't see it last year and i was happy that no country for old men won best picture, but now i'm a southland tales convert, and i'll definitely be pushing it on friends. i wasn't a huge fan of donnie darko the first time through, but i thought he made excellent use of sound/songs, picked exactly the right moment and exactly the right music. i liked it better, after i saw it the second time a couple years ago, but yeah, how could this be the same director? except for the knack of merging perfect soundtrack and film, that is. who'd of thought justin timberlake and a killers song rattle such an earthquake tremor. the killers! for anyone who has yet to see this magnificence...
