Aha!

Jeff Nichols's Shotgun Stories (apparently not released in the States?), a tale of a family feud gone wrong in rural Arkansas was kind of early Coen Bros. fare mixed with an obvious Malick influence. It bordered on the cliché/annoying at time (notable overuse of repetitive acoustic guitar music in the first half-hour), but always landed on its feet rather nicely.

Well, that's not exactly got me more excited, but at least I know I should keep an eye out for it, should it ever come anywhere near me or is available as a torrent. Thank you.

i'm with maaik but i'm less conflicted. i think the moldy peaches and kimya dawson's solo work both suck horrifically. now, she may be a super-nice person, and so might be the guy from reggie and the full effect or dave matthews or a lot of other people whose music i hate, but i don't really see why that should have any bearing on whether or not i voice unequivocal hatred for any of their musics.

and i fucking hate kimya dawson's music. it is obnoxious.

I should have mentioned that the lead actor, whose name I don't remember, is pretty great. So yeah, despite my reservations, I'd say go see it if you have an opportunity!

Also OT last week I saw Dans la vie and J'ai toujours rêvé d'être un gangster, both of which were good.

it's new association with juno is obnoxious, yeah.  and i'll say that there are some god awful moldy peaches songs.   but like i said, there are times when it's good to have some music that doesn't take itself too seriously.

Michael Shannon! He was awesome in Bug. A film which I recommend whole heartedly.

Well, I'll rep for Reggie and the Full Effect.  If we can find someone on the board who likes Dave Matthews, we've got ourselves a three-pronged anti-TSKS machine.

And I found a torrent for Shotgun Stories, so I'll be using that as an excuse to get nothing done this afternoon.

And the torrents file is bogus. Ah, well, I've got a still in its wrapper copy of Georgia on my shelf, maybe I'll watch that instead. I suspect it'll have a similar southern rustic vibe.

So, I went and saw Run, Fat Boy, Run last night. I saw it for free, as my friend Jenny works here. I seem to be thinking of it a little more fondly now than when I was actually watching it, but all in all I thought it was incredibly disappointing. It was a pretty straight-forward (read: tired, cliche, etc.) romantic comedy with a few really good jokes and a lot of jokes that fell flat. It felt like a very American production to me, despite the British cast and UK locales. The score was tripe, typical romcom bullshit, the soundtrack okay but not great. The timing of the jokes was definitely off; jokes that needed a little room to hang did not, other jokes that may have worked better in succession with other jokes felt instead throwaway. The acting was all pretty good. I feel like Dylan Moran could have been utilized differently--some of his bits were incredibly funny, but he was still just the zany best friend you see in nine out of ten bland comedies. I'd like to blame this all on David Schwimmer, and surely, he deserves to shoulder a lot of the blame, but I definitely expected a lot more from a script by Simon Pegg and Michael Ian Black. The plot is essentially interchangeable with any number of the romcoms you'll find on MyTV at three o'clock Saturday afternoon, and we knew what was going to happen the whole time. I really hoped that Pegg's character would somehow hook up with India de Beaufort, but no. Guy loses Girl through stupidity. Guy tries unsuccessfully to win Girl back. Girl finds New Guy who is everything First Guy is not. Guy resolves to really do it, really win Girl back. Hints that New Guy might actually be a prick. Girl and New Guy get engaged, Guy gives up. At the last minute, Guy gets his resolve back, New Guy turns out to really be a prick, Guy wins Girl back, The End. Yawn.

That all said, there were some really, really funny moments, and some jokes that were good but just didn't quite work. It was worth seeing (esp. for free), but disappointing overall.

michael ian black is surely swine, if he is the guy i think he is, who was on the tv show ed, and did all this vh1 make fun of the 80's bullshit, but i bet david schwimmer was behind it, that catamite.

Blaming Michael Ian Black over Simon Pegg assumes that it's Pegg that's mostly responsible for the greatness of Spaced, Shaun of the Dead, and Hot Fuzz. I think this is a bad assumption, and that probably Edgar Wright is the brilliant one. Pegg is funny and writes good jokes, but I'm not really surprised that Run, Fat Boy, Run isn't anything special, honestly. I'm actually more surprised at how straight forward it is with Michael Ian Black's involvement, considering how fucking goofy and wonderfully stupid and nonsensical The State and Stella are.

Really though the most disappointing thing about Run, Fat Boy, Run is that Dylan Moran didn't completely steal the show.

I'm real pleased about the responses from this film I've heard, mostly negative. As I suspect it might mean we may finally get a much deserved Simon Pegg backlash. Which means all I'll really have to wait for is a Ricky Gervais backlash and I can die a moderately to minorly of melancholy motherfucker. Rather then being one filled with rage.

Motherfucker, you're the one who turned me on to Spaced in the first place!

Or maybe it was Coldforge. Hmph.

Heh, nah. Spaced is good enough. No real arguments on that score, but I've got to admit I was more than baffled at the reception those films got. I like a certain amount of irreverent pop culture humour as much as the next idiot, but sometimes, sigh... it's a bit much.

the state is the only non-shit program on that list.

that said, jeb, your point about pegg vs. wright makes plenty of sense.

blockbuster really sucks.  I can't find anything that remotely interests me anymore.  Yes yes I know netflix but meh that seems like so much commitment and I wouldn't even know where to begin.  I want to actually go to a store when I'm in the mood, talk to real people and get something that appeals to me.  The only good video store in Orlando (Stardust) is phasing out their video section for a restaurant, LAME.

Has anyone heard about the movie "wrist cutters"?  The only thing I know about it is that Patrick Fugit is hotttt and that he kills himself but still lives???
