The new Indiana Jones film is boring.
You make me sad.  However, I will continue to stick my head in the sand and shout LALALALALALALALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU until I have seen it myself, at which point I will probably climb a clock tower somewhere in George Lucas's vicinity.

That movie was ALL FUCKING SORTS of awesome. There are Musical Numbers With Dancing Zombies. Do I need to say more. Do I. There is no question mark because no I do not need to say more, if dancing zombies dont make you want to see it then, well, theres no way to finish that sentence. You should see it.

There are musical numbers with dancing CORPSES.  Since they did not hunger for human flesh, they do not qualify as zombies in my book sister.  Cue someone coming in and telling me about the original meaning of zombies, voodoo, haiti, etc.  I DON'T CARE.  It's George Romero or nothing baby!

Also the music was really bad and the claymation sequences made me want to claw my own eyes out.

I only just saw Indiana Jones 1 and 3 yesterday/today and don't know what my life was without it. I'll go see the new one even if it's not so good, cos all the explosions! Russians! Snakes! will be grand on the big screen.

This is more or less my approach, as well.  I want to get excited about it, but every time I start getting kinda jazzed, my brain goes "EPISODE I" and then I get all flaccid.

Also, I say everyone should bug Campbell to make sure Little Bits of Light finds its way to a distributor with a quickness. Petition him constantly!

Campbell, get little bits of light to a distributor, because some of us have been wanting to see it for quite some time.

seriously.

Well, let's put it this way: if Little Bits Of Light isn't distributed in six months, we will come and RAID YOUR RECORD COLLECTION

Ha! I might have sold all my records by then, to try and pay for putting it out.

Is that what you want?

Anyway, on Indy and the Crystal Skull:

I thought it was very fun as I was watching although I had to rationalize to myself re: what would fit in (the 1980s Indiana Jones conception of) a 1930s serial vs. what the pre-existing narrative conventions of the Indy idiom are. The movie breaks a number of conventions. And the more I think about it now, the less I like it, but I had fun the first time through.

A number of mild-spoiler comments:

1. Cate Blanchett is too talented to be playing Natasha Fatale.

2. FUCK THE MONKEYS. SERIOUSLY.

edit: do we want a new page, or...?

I shouldnt cost heaps, should it? You talk to distributors, send them the film and they put it out if they like it, yes? At least, isnt that what we should try? Look, make you a deal, cos I know you're busy with selling my records for me and your records for you, but after that are you more free? In that case, I give you a little over a month to be on it. After that I'll be finished exams and if its not moving then I'll take it off you and Rob and I will do it.

so hey, i watched "Band of outsiders" today. it was suggested to me by a girl i talked to for like a week on an internet dating site, right before she suddenly stopped returning my messages (isn't that always the way?). i didn't really know where else to go with godard after having seen "Breathless" so i was glad for the suggestion, and even moreso now that i've seen the movie, as i really liked it. the weird way godard interprets the american pulp-crime genre really appeals to me as i am the sort both when reading and when writing to prefer stories in which the characters are the main focus and the plot is almost background, merely a device that helps show us what the characters are like and how they are growing. i felt like "band of outsiders" was definitely structured that way. another point: whenever i watch old french new wave movies, it reminds me that a lot of the more standard american movies that i watch are much more heavy-handed with the way they establish characters and their personalities. directors like godard and truffaut are so subtle with that stuff, it makes me feel like hollywood movies are shoving it down my throat. and by being so much more subtle, the french new wave directors make so much more room for nuance and multi-dimensional personalities in their characters. this also pleases me. i think a lot of the "new hollywood" stuff from the 70s that i love so much must take a lot of influence from the french new wave as well, based on this one characteristic alone. i've noticed the same sort of thing in movies like "five easy pieces".

but so yes, "band of outsiders" was very good. i was really happy with the ending. even though 15 minutes before, i had no idea what was going to happen and couldn't even begin to predict it, it still turned out pretty much exactly how i would have liked for it to come out. and really, i just liked the film overall.

anyone want to suggest more french new wave films for me to check out, while we're here? i have the rest of truffaut's antoine doinel series on my netflix queue, and i think i also have "jules and jim" somewhere in the queue. beyond that, i don't really know where to go. also, if there are any other non-french movies from that era with a similar sensibility, please tell me about them.

I just watched "The Sword of Doom" for the first time a few days ago.  I liked it quite a bit, and I'd recommend it to anyone who is remotely interested in 60's samurai films or spaghetti westerns.  The lead actor played his character very well, and came off as a completely heartless bastard.  The fight scenes are way awesome, fools get cut down all over the place, and Mifune makes a minor appearance where he kicks ass like usual.  The only thing that chaps my ass a bit is that the movie was meant to be the start of a series, which was never continued, so several plot elements are never resolved.

at the weekend i watched King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters and wow, that was an awesome documentary. leaving aside the hilarity of everyone in that movie being both totally insane and entirely representative of the way so many people in the world seem to be, it was just intense. when the dude was on track for an epic game and he hears his kid coming down the stairs crying and he just says "oh no", that was just too much for me. great film.

i also saw the end of Soul in the Hole which was a basketball documentary that hit me way harder than the only other basketball documentary i ever watched (Hoop Dreams). all the old footage was just so vivid. i felt pretty emotional after that one.

then this week i finally watched Sunshine and well, i think i'll probably enjoy it more the second time around if i ever do watch it a second time. but it had some good things going for it and some not so good things too, and i don't mind that i had nightmares about it afterwards because on the whole it was a good experience. i liked how you started off with this kind of miniature society and then by the end everything was just so alien as to make perfect sense.

but yeah, i wanted to write about all those films because they all did some stuff to me.

and on the news this morning some person said there was talk of making a fifth film, and i just can't get the image of christiano ronaldo's worst haircut making out with natalie portman next to a CG lake out of my head. i guess what i'm saying is that i'm fully prepared for it to be lame, but i think staying optimistic is the best path right now. that said, i don't care at all as much about any of these films as other people do, so it's just i'll be sad about having paid some to see a lame film, rather than feeling cheated once again by the man behind the green curtain.

she gives it 3 and 1/2 crystal skulls.
