The worst thing about Springsteen is that Manfred Mann song. Wrapped up like a doooooshhh

the original is cut loose like a deuce

which isn't much better really

yeah, "minstrel act" is pretty offensive. i just took it to mean Springsteen's characters are caricatures. i disagree, but it's a proposition metcalf could support if he worked at it.
naw, the writers whole position there is that everything that springsteen does is dictated to him by landau, and springsteen hasn't made a single creative decision for himself since BTR, and is essentially denigrating himself for the entertainment of his audience.

Yeah, I love the album, but I sorta view it is a happy accident in his discography.

I don't hear too many folks clamoring about Asbury Park these days, but that and E-Street Shuffle are my faves.

Yep, my feelings too.

Another happy accident is "Hungry Heart". Great fucking song, but kind of a freak to my ears.

How is it hipster to like an excellent record? Just because it stands out from the rest it is still undeniably Bruce. Darkness on the edge of town is my all time fave but Nebraska is pretty near second next to the e street shuffle.

I know basically zero Springsteen because I can't fucking stand the fake overemotiveness of his voice.

Yes, isn't it more hipster to arbitrarily hate random records that other people like?

From my experience, there are a whole bunch of people who like Nebraska a lot, and claim to dislike most of Springsteen's other stuff. It is a great record, but it's not his best. It's maybe his fourth best. I think Nebraska is lauded above all else by a certain crowd because it's lo-fi, or whatever.

Different people like different things in their music.

Nebraska sticks out in Springsteen's catalog, stylistically. So to me it makes perfect sense that a fair number of people that are listening more to the music, the overall feel and mood would think of that record differently than the rest, liking it more or less than the generalized others.

I like a fair amount of Springsteen, but much of this is because I grew up in the 80s and Born in the USA and the next couple records and a few earlier hits have a fair amount of nostalgic value. But even with me knowing near none of the album before reaching it as a whole Nebraska is by far the one that hits me.

Now if the demo versions of The River were released it would have some competition.

The best thing is playing "Rosalita" at your wedding and your mom and your exboyfriend from high school dancing and singing together like it is the most fun they've ever had.

I feel like the reason people tend to like Nebraska more than other Springsteen records is because it has less of the things that make people hate Springsteen.  I have not tested this hypothesis on myself.

Can we all just pause and appreciate how neat this is.

Appreciating music (or any art) is a 100% subjective endeavour. I've never understood why a fuzz has to be made about who likes what and for what reasons or why one shouldn't or not.

Well, we don't all agree about fundamental subjectivity is why.
