other than pollo being his usual self, i don't think anyone actually meant to imply that the name was for shock value--just that it had that particular effect on some of us

in me it just conjured up an image of like a five-year-old zombie or something chasing you round.attack of the killer dead child, night of the living dead child, dawn of the dead (...child), etc. i have been desensitised by too many jeffrey lewis albums and zombie rock and roll club nights.

So I ordered the album a couple weeks ago, but didn't have my record player set up to till just a few hours ago.  I listened to this record after a Bruce Dickinson solo CD, which I thought was perfect.  It almost seemed like a continuation, minus a couple vocal octaves.  I was in a really open mindset to the sound of his voice.  I wasn't sure if I was going to like it from the little I heard off the internet...but I'm glad I do.  "Armies Up Ahead" is a cool song.

Oh hi!

Sticking my nose in to say:

a) Yes, I am still alive and still wish to marry each and every one of you

b) When I am Queen of the Universe I will issue a decree that any organization wishing to call itself "Dead Child" must first do 5000 hours of community service in the NICU.

"Ooh, I know, let's be really crazy rebellious and name our band after the most devastating, crushing, soul-destroying experience any human being can have!"

Jerks.

Hey PE!

Way to be YOUR USUAL SELF

I have no idea how to interpret that, Chicken!

I've decided to take it as a compliment.

Thanks!

Yuh HUH!

OK, I skimmed. Then I saw that there soapbox over there and leapt upon it, words already spewing forth in great torrents.

Which, I guess, IS me being my usual self, so there you have it.

When do I get to call it a stir?

Also, I think it's actually a really good, successful idea to name your band Dead Child if it pisses people like plainenglish off.

If your goal is to be disregarded out of hand by everyone who is not already a metal person, it is a good name

I get the feeling that most metal bands want only to be disregarded out of hand by non metal people, though

Couldn't hurt. Lord knows that when your only perspective on metal matters is, 'how can I, as someone with more mature and intelligent tastes than these people, let them know what they'd have to do to achieve my attention, and, maybe some time in the future, respect?' that they probably aren't gearing too hard to get you to buy a t-shirt.

My, coldforge setting new lows in basic decency in conversation.

It must do your ego no end of good to always assume the very worst of people.

Actually I wanted to apologize for bein such an ass; it's just that metal is entirely inscrutable to me and I often get the impression that that's the way it's meant to be.

It's not that it's meant to be inscrutable; it's just that metal is really used to being either sneered at or totally ignored (except for the select few who still like to pretend that Tipper Gore is all over their case), and so it has developed a sensibility and reasoning that has very little room for input or attention to the world outside of metal. So I'm sure Dead Child's reasoning went something along the lines of 'You know what's a fucking metal name? Dead Child. It's as brutal as PROSTITUTE DISFIGUREMENT, but it is just pulled back enough from over-the-top that it's even MORE metal.' And the fact that its being so metal disturbs some other people is honestly, probably, not being thought about one way or the other.

I'm not being flippant; there's a quality, or a series of qualities, that we call 'metal'; I think it's really interesting to figure out what we mean when we talk about whether something is metal or not, but I can assure you that the effect they were looking for had nothing to do with other, non-metal folk; they found 'Dead Child' to be a really brutal name and they went with it. The fact that Pajo has made his career floating around the non-metal universe is a very interesting factor in this turn of events, but it doesn't render them irrelevant.

Yeah I was being totally sarcastic and, as mentioned above, an ass. I don't really think they picked that name with the intention of affecting non metal folks one way or the other.

I agree with coldforge.  I seriously see no problem with the name.  Just because it's more successful at being offensive then alot of the flowery death metal names doesn't make it any more guilty.
