I'd also argue that it's a natural reaction to deeply-felt pain and that the few times in my life that I've experienced great loss, the very fucking last thing I wanted to hear from anyone was "I know how you feel." It's irrational, but I think it's also very human to want your despair to be something discrete and unique and there's absolutely nothing "offensive" about it.

Saying "I know how you feel" to someone in a situation like that is really really stupid and presumptuous emotionally hollow and tacky and implies a promise of emotional solidarity that will almost never be followed through is why I don't like it.  It's more about coming to a better understanding of knowing how someone feels than simply proclaiming that you know exactly how they feel, as if that is supposed to make anything any fucking better, which you well know it does not, especially coming from the mouth of some callow prick as his hand squeezes your shoulder.  Fuck that guy.

Again though, Dead Child makes me think of wee zombie kids, night of living dead style, which is more cartoony than anything. I think there are far more offensive band names that could be made a kerfuffle over- seeing as you can take dead child to mean a zombie kid, a generic deceased child, or you, yes, you I'm talking to you, your dead baby, which are varying levels of offensive interpretations, it is in the end less offensive than something like say, Joy Division, which actually refers to something unambiguously horrible. But because Joy Division are super popular and none of us have actually been in one, we dont treat it as offensive.
Maybe I'd raise more of a fuss over names like Dead Child, or My Dad is Dead if my father was actually dead, or  I'd had a kid that died? I dont know.

Are you talking about the last post before the one about the 'tern for the worse', or that post itself, edison? Because I am under the impression that you are referring to the former, while Al was talking about the latter, with its tern/turn pun. I found the former hilarious and brave (I have ethical issues with the word 'ballsy'), but the latter, well, a bad pun indeed.
