Today I find myself working for Herman Miller. They're having some manner of meeting here. Right now they're showing a bunch of Herman Miller commercials from the 50s through the 70s. Besides the whole "WHATEVER SHALL WE DO WITH THESE WOMEN IN THE WORKPLACE??" overtones, there's one involving a cowboy in a tulip chair and a number of bizzare Warhol-esque ads from the 60's.
ask them for an aeron!

Ha! I wish!
Actually, there are a couple aeronesque chairs that another company left here after a conference that I've been staking out for the past couple months. The only issue is that they don't have wheels. It's weird.
Also, I can't believe how interesting the company history is. Who knew that mid-century modernism came from Michigan.
Also, free lunch!

ZOMG! I am totally looking at a love letter that Charles Eames wrote to Ray Eames. It's like the cutest thing ever. He couldn't spell.

Walking to work, I pass two black women walking the same way. One sees my grocery bag full of lunch,
"Smart to bring your lunch, shorty." [I am 6'5".]
I turn, "That's right."
She continues, "See, that's how you do. Paying for lunch is a stupid game."
I'm now 20 feet ahead, so I just keep walking and give her the thumbs up.
"You gotta get yourself a black girlfriend. She'll set you up with some real food."
If only she knew the bag contained fried catfish, black-eyed peas w/ bacon, and dirty rice.

Y'know, I keep hearing nasally-inflected rumors that it comes in a new color, "True Black."

I thought scrabulous was shut down because of copyright agreement and you can only play through facebook now which is OK but not as awesome as live online scrabble. This is one of the favorite pass-times of my long distance (a mere 3 hours but still sucky at times) bf and I. Is there another site you can play it live?

scrabulous still works, for me at least. it goes in and out where sometimes the java applet doesn't load, and it's pretty laggy, but i don't think it's shut down.

That is excellent news!
something random:
this kid on my field trip today was ALL ABOUT hammerhead sharks:
me: can anyone tell us an example of a consumer we might find at the mud flats?
kid: HAMMERHEAD SHARK
me: maaaybe, but I don't think we'll find any today.... (a question or two later) What is special about decomposers?
kid: HAMMERHEAD SHARKS EAT THEM
out in the water the kid picks up a super tiny horse shoe crab
kid: OH MY GOD IT'S A HAMMERHEAD SHARK
me: (holding back laughter) I'm not sure, what else could this possibly be?
kid: (defeated) a horse shoe crab
oh man later his group caught a spider crab and I asked them why they think it covers its back with grass and stuff and the kid goes "I don't know, aren't you doing research? You find out!"

one of my girlfriend's pupils was obsessed with spiders for a while. he used to ask her what her favourite spider was, what kind of spider she would be, then eventually he had to be disciplined for pretending to be a spider in the classroom.
that christmas she got a christmas card that said "happy christmas" on the outside and "and a happy NEW SPIDER!!" on the inside.

happy new spider! That is so adorable, I may start saying that instead of "hello" as it sounds infinitely more friendly and awesome. Another day, another spider!

As I get older, I have started using more and more exclamation points. My mother does this.
Guys, please just keep an eye on me and make sure I don't start using multiple explamation points on the same sentence.

Has anyone ever caught themselves having a conversation and raising their eye brows and jerking their neck foward as a substitute for exclamation marks?

Dom, remember that time we had curry and sang karaoke? We should do that again. Found those pictures the other day.
