Nice seeing you, Jim! But all due respect to beer, chocolate is just more important, period.

What the fuck is the matter with you people? Well, whisky is more important than anything.

People, people. This is such a useless argument The variations of importance within these food groups are far greater than those between them. I'd rather drink a good Triple than eat a bar of cheap milk chocolate with artificial strawberry filling, but I'd rather eat a good bar of chocolate with a high cocoa content and almond splinters than drink a can of Heineken.

Nice attempt at dodging the question, but I believe the theoretical choice is between beer on the whole and chocolate on the whole, right?

I can't fathom why anyone would reject chocolate for a drink which on the whole tastes like sheet metal. I like beer on occasion, but only in a specific setting, i.e. with something salty, specifically nachos, on a hot day. Chocolate is for every day.

ad edison: Yeah, and what I was saying is that I reject this style of framing the issue.
You and I both know where I stand on this issue, of course, but it's so nice to have Jim around again, let's not scare him off.

I think it's important to note that it's only foreign devils who would take chocolate over beer. Obviously beer's a staple of civilization.
This argument is so much better than that bullshit EUROPE OR MOON thing

Robert once said to me that he would rather drink 2 good beers than 6 bad ones. I understand the distinction he was making, but to me this was no Gordian knot. I replied that I'd rather have 6 good beers.
Rogue Chocolate Stout
Young's Double Chocolate Stout
Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout
Ommegang Chocolate Indulgence
edit: Very well, if I must...
Rogue Mocha Porter
Southern Tier Choklat
(probably the most chocolatey of them all)

I have to say that these chocolate beers create a kind of morbid curiosity in me

Not if you drink 3 of the Brooklyn.
Of course you will not be standing afterward.

Ugh man, the regular Brooklyn Lager is just about sugary enough for me. I can't imagine what their chocolate stout must be like.
One of the best chocolate stouts I've ever had comes, unsurprisingly, from Rogue:

Super rich, super interesting flavors. I dunno if this stuff's still around or not, but it's worth keeping an eye out for.

Man. I want this, so much.
I've never had a chocolate stout, actually, but it sounds like a brilliant invention (I don't know what seems weird to you about this, edison?). There's not enough stout in this part of the world.

I don't know, I have never had one either, and it just sounds like two excellent things that would cancel each other out or conflict with each other. I'd certainly be happy to be proven wrong!

I can't believe you guys have never had a chocolate stout! Is this primarily an American/British thing?

Yeah, honestly, I love the craft beers, but I can have about .5 chocolate beers a week.

I'd think so. Australian, too. There's really not a whole lot of stout, chocolate or otherwise, in continental Europe as far as I can tell (would you disagree with that, Jim?). I would hope that nobody has ever tried their hands on a chocolate pils...

Chocolate beer (and sweet beer generally) is great occasionally, and in small doses. However, coffee beer is great more often and in slightly larger doses.

I've had both of the Rogues. The chocolate one is indeed chocolate-y, definitely not an everyday kind of beer, but I've had it on its own just as a rich, somewhat dessert-y beer. The mocha porter is a favorite, and reminds me of the iced coffee from my favorite coffee shop (or vice versa). Both are pretty easy to find around here if you go somewhere that sells good beers. Or Whole Foods for that matter--the one near me almost always has the chocolate, and often the mocha.

It's rare that I'm super wild about chocolate stout; frequently I either find them too sticky-sweet or with the chalky chocolate taste of a cheap fudgesicle. There aren't many I find too enjoyable.
That said, one of my favorite beers is Kelso's
Chocolate Lager
, which was shockingly good; I think the relatively mild flavor of the lager must serve the same purpose as the fat that's usually in chocolate, mellowing the whole thing out, besmoothening it. When I do drink a chocolate beer, I'll usually just have one, then move on to something else. The Kelso, I could easily drink pint after pint of to fill an evening.

I think I'm going to look into these chocolate beers on my way home - there's a very good off licence (i.e. liquor store) in my neighbourhood - even though it's cider weather.
And then I'm going to sit on my front step and raise a glass to no longer absent friends. Drinking on a school-night Jim- look what you've done to me!

the last of my Brooklyn chocolate stout was finished off during the pickle-making and I should get some more, but I've been in a cider mood lately, too. I recently tried pear cider, which is quite delicious.
