Is that Bill Rieflin (Minus 5) with the Venus 3? - when I saw them play, it was fantastic, 4 supercool, grey-haired old dudes that just seemed 20% bigger than normal people in every dimension.

I shook hands with Scott McCaughey after too, which was fine by me.

I love that Bill Rieflin has become identified with that whole R.E.M./Robyn Hitchcock crowd in his old age even though he started out playing in Ministry and Pigface.

That Venus 3 lineup is a pretty killer band, hey? I remember watching them play the last time Mr. Hitchcock was in town and thinking, yup, any one of these guys is a big enough draw to get me out of the house, and there are four of them up there.

Yeah! I mean it really isn't my genre of choice, but I'm a RH fanataic, so I've been drawn in. When they did 'Ballad Of A Thin Man' live last year, it was one of the best 'band playing as one' moments I can remember seeing. They were really sorry to stop playing that song that night.

Last night saw one of the best music collections I've ever come across. Fucking insane. Thousands and thousands of awesome records. I'd estimate approx 2500 7"s alone. And it wasn't crappy shit either, everything seemed at least a little interesting.  Heaps of obscure psych and punk. Original 7"s that turned up on KBD comps. I was in heaven. The owner was a pretty cool guy as well so I'll be returning at some point to get drunk and listen to records.

Linked from the New Yorker guy's blog. This article is amazing. Kind of about Lil Wayne but not. Read it.

Oh damn, Oxford American is an outstanding magazine.

EDIT: Nothing else has ever convinced me to so much as download a Li'l Wayne record, but I'm halfway through that article and I am now firing up Soulseek to get some of his stuff.

I find the occasional L'il Wayne line to be just off the rails awesome. But, really, the latest album doesn't do a lot for me. I like him when his similes require a lot of work to make them make any sense at all, and the new album is a little straightforward for me. I know lots of people like his delivery, but I don't know about that so much.

So, what have we decided about the Fiery Furnaces live album? Should I buy it?

It's a sprawling mess, but I enjoy it!  Full of typically unrecognizable variations on album tracks, a la their live shows.  "I'm Waiting To Know You", for instance, was originally one of their two or three best simple pop songs but on Remember the verses are accompanied by a repeating chromatic motif that's borderline dodecaphonic in the same way Beethoven's Grosse Fuge was accidentally proto-serial.  I dig it!  I really think it would take a pretty diehard FF fan to like it, though; it's the last FF album I'd use to introduce new people to them crazy Friedbergers.

edit: since your handle is a beefheart reference, you'd undoubtedly love it so no worries

cheers for that - really good read.

ellaguru - i half want to agree with you about the new album and half don't. i think i have more of a problem with there being too many choruses and a few weak beats, and with it being seen as a major album where everything else apparently wasn't major. if it was just the next tape (which i realise is an unrealistic hypothetical, and if it was just the next tape it would've sounded a lot different, but still), everyone would still be going apeshit over it.

I'm not a diehard fan at all. I have Gallowsbird Bark & Bitter Tea only. But I have a bootleg of a live show lying around somewhere and that's what actually got me excited about them. It's fucking crazy good. I haven't heard the official live album yet (although I did see the 3XLP edition at the record store last week) I'll be picking it up ASAP.

Nick, how would you rank their albums?  Just out of curiosity, from one diehard fan to another.

Although I'm not Nick, I'd go:

Bitter Tea
Blueberry Boat
Gallowsbird's Bark
E.P.
Widow City

and I haven't heard the gramma thing but once.

And, yes, I know I'm not supposed to rank Bitter Tea that high, but what'r'ya gonna do? It's a good record.

God, I have such a hard time ranking Fiery Furnaces albums because they are so damn difficult to listen to all the way through. I actually think EP might be my favorite. It's the most accessible, at least. The other albums are certainly more complex and maybe ultimately more rewarding, but EP gives me the instant gratification I sometimes desire. It is the easiest to grow to love, IMO.

most fave --> least fave

Blueberry Boat
Rehearsing My Choir
Bitter Tea
Widow City
Gallowsbird's Bark
E.P.

That said, I like everything they've done, so I'm not exactly objective!
