i'm still a n00b to the Whole Foods shopping experience.  i've been there about three times now, and each time i still feel like i'm walking about disoriented.  but today i saw something to really make my eyes boggle.  i was in the produce section and wandered into the frozen seafood section and saw a whole bunch of octopi stuffed into a vacuum sealed package.  apparently they offer baby octopus salad as an entree option.  yeck.

ewwwwwwwwwwww.

mmmmmmmmmmm. Octopus is tasty stuff.

Also if any of other nearby markets start selling produce that's actually consistently worth paying for, then maybe I'll give up my Whole Foods, but not until then. Farmers Markets are good in the summer, but they've got a limited season here.

I shouldnt be thinkng so hard about this, because now I'm at University I'm constantly surrounded by lithe, perfect 18 year olds, and it is bad bad bad for the self esteem, but I had pancakes for dinner the other night, and they were so good I think I want to have them for dinner again tonight.

grace, i feel you. i work in a hip upscale shopping district. i'm surrounded by nubile teenagers pretty much anytime the shopping district isn't dead, and it's particularly bad this month because high school and college classes are out.

in the building I work in:  two modelling agencies and one casting agency.  don't even get me started about all the movies they film within a few blocks.  and where I live is full of people who look like they just finished being in a photo shoot, and are only waiting around drinking coffee until the light shifts so they can finish their shoot.  the beautiful people are everywhere!

Sorry to return the thread to the topic of food (when we all would be happier talking about Greg Nog for sure), but, holy cow, the strawberries I found at the store tonight are so good. They're exactly perfectly ripe. I'm already dangerously close to eating them all. I expect  that I will finish them tonight.

well in other whole food related news - i tried making rice from their bulk containers for the first time.  i ended up making 2 and 1/2 cups of this basmati/wild rice mixture, and that ended up being enough to feed a 12 person family.  lesson learned.

Yeah, 2 1/2 cups is a lot of rice. Now that you're talking about rice, I also bought asparagus, and that goes pretty well with rice. . . I suppose I can wait until tomorrow, though. (I did finish all of the strawberries, by the way.)

So tonight was grand. Some folks and I went to this truck stop diner for late night supper. I found on the menu that when you get the chicken fried steak dinner for $8 or whatever, for the low low price of an additional 2.99 you can double up the meal and get a second (!) chicken fried steak and second side. Well how the hell was I supposed to pass that up? So I got two chicken fried steaks and a pile of mashed potatoes and a pile of hashbrowns, all very generous portions, slathered with country gravy and holy crap it was delicious. DELICIOUS. And then! Ben went up to the counter to get our tabs and the waitress was like, "Oh, don't worry about it. You guys were fun to have around." And we were like, "Oh damn," because between the 4 of us, it was almost certainly right around a $50 check. So yeah, we left a pretty fucking good tip.

cooked, that would be like 5 cups of rice.  easily enough for 10 people if you're serving other things with it!

I closed the kitchen tonight, which means it is just me rocking out to QUE BUENO (my favorite Chicago radio station) and cooking random pub food for drunk people until one. Three hours just standing, cleaning, and eating. So yeah sometimes maybe I get high.
So tonight I was blazed and realize I am surrounded by greasy food and three fryalators and my limits were my imagination. It was like handing baby Mozart a violin.

You bet your ass I had a huge steak, egg, pepperjack, rasher (thick irish bacon), tomato, mushroom, and onion sandwich. It had mayo on it. YOU BET YOUR SWEET SWEET ASS. It was so fucking awesome.
You bet your ass I fried mushrooms. Then stuffed some peppers with onions and lime and cilantro and fried those.
Then I started to lose steam. And then remembered the tray of bread pudding. Made some sweet whiskey sauce. Put it on the pudding.
Later I had some miniature turkey burgers with red peppers and cheddar. And maybe a brownie.

mmm mmm mmmm. Me alone and stoned in the kitchen is dangerous, friends. DANGEROUS.

I slept like crap last night, and as a result, I'm hungry as hell.  A double-helping of chicken-fried steak would be mighty delicious.

no, i'm gonna make TWO.

My sister has a really good recipe for marinated portobello-burgers.  I should try to find it.

I just marinate the shrooms in a bottle of balsamic vinegar overnight and then grill em on the George Foreman. Pretty excellent.

This is about how I do it too, along with some basic seasoning. Except for the Foreman grill because I don't have one, but I do have my grillin' grill. Pretty top-notch, really.
