I was a vegetarian until a couple months ago.

Man! It's happening to everyone! Morgan, JustinH, my friend Luke! Soon I will be the only one left!

(And then I can feel superior to EVERYONE)

I was a strict vegetarian for 19 years until 3 years ago.

My roommate just tried being vegetarian for a month.  At the end of it, I was like, "So how do you feel?  You gonna keep it up?" and he was like, "No no no Oh my holy shit I miss eating meat SO MUCH."

It's still a bit odd. Basically, I eat fish and chicken quite regularly but almost never eat red meat. That's because of a squeamish psychological aversion to it, rather than a principle though - those 19 years just made the idea of it nauseating. But, yeah, basically around the time of my well-documented operation in Korea, I was in a reasonably serious state of ill health and ate what the doctors told me too. Over the preceeding years, my ethical commitment to vegetarianism had kind of ebbed away anyway, so that's what happened in my case.

Yeah, post-dysentery my doctor told me to have some meat, so I started eating it again.  I could go back to veg, but I'm enjoying trying some meat dishes that I was never adventurous enough to try before I went veg.  I'm just on a little rumspringa right now, if you will. I'll probably go back to veg soon.

This is amusing to me, because I'd wager that it was going veg that made you a more adventurous eater.

"What's so bad about vegetarianism?" you may ask...  Telling yourself "It's not that bad, surely, many productive people use vegetables."  The fact of the matter is, vegetarianism is a GATEWAY CUISINE, often leading to harder, more varied, more dangerous CHEESES, HERBS, AND EVEN MEATS.

and me too.

i ate meat for 22 years, and when i finally crossed over it was because i'd moved in with my fiance, and it was just more convenient and peaceful to eat what she ate. when i finally decided to cut meat out of my diet entirely, it just happened. i put almost no energy into it whatsoever. one day i had a wendy's value meal with a junior bacon cheeseburger, and the next day i was a vegetarian. once i had absorbed more of the culture and cuisine of vegetarianism, i became really happy and proud of my decision and not once have i ever had the urge to go back to eating meat. in fact, being a vegetarian has paradoxically opened up a lot of doors for me, diet-wise. i've become a much more healthy, adventurous, and creative eater because of it.

however: last night i went to a wedding and at the reception they were grilling fresh steaks with all these juices and spices and i was like, damn.

...but then i found the veg table and it had marinated asparagus and artichoke hearts and fried eggplant and all sorts of breads and cheeses, and i was happy once again.

sadly, the beer selection was balls.

Last night at about 1am we all came to the group realization that we'd been drinking Guinness for eight hours without eating so we built a huge fucking fire and spitted a dozen half chickens. We ate them crouched over large flat stones. I wanted to go hunt a deer with a club.

Vegetarian 25 years! i have eaten meat about 3 times. Its to the point where I dont really associate it as food, its like candle wax- you can eat it, sure, but that doesnt make it food. (this only applies to me though, I enjoy people enjoying meat.)
